Thursday 6th October

Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple, died last night after a courageous battle with cancer, at the relatively young age of 56.

Jobs today has been called an innovator, a genius, a leader in the technology field, someone who created a legacy that will last generations, a true visionary, and just about everything in between.

Never has someone been regarded so high in the technology field, and his legacy will continue in just about everything we use today.

From ipod’s to ipad’s, to apple mac’s to his relationship with Microsoft some years ago when Microsoft actually kept the company going because Microsoft itself didn’t want the company to fold because it would have been broken up itself.

Jobs used to say in many of his speeches, “never let anyone else stop you following your dreams”, “never let negative people put you off you pursuing what you know what to be right”, he often encouraged entrepreneurs of all kinds to have a go at what they thought could work, what they thought the public wanted and what they thought deep down in their hearts to be true.

With your exercise programme and your food intake, you secretly know what is right and true.

You don’t need to read another diet in the paper that you know is faddy, you don’t need to fall for yet another faddy exercise machine, you don’t need to be put off by some of your negative friends who don’t even work out at all  yet are overweight, you don’t need to believe anyone who makes claims you know are too good to be true etc etc.

So whatever the situation you are in, focus on yourself and what you know to be right. There will be times when you feel like giving up on your workouts, on your food, on your alcohol levels, but actually following through every time you doubt yourself instead of giving up will take you a long, long way!!!

Steve Jobs RIP

Tuesday, October 4th

Nothing beats the feeling of being a programme and know you’re on a mission too get into serious shape.

This can take many forms.

You may be a true individual in every sense of the word, and want to do everything yourself, you want privacy but are very determined and do whatever it takes to achieve your goals.

You may be the person who feels too intimidated to go into a gym, you may feel sad about how you have let your body go, and you may not even know where to start?

You may be the person who has been there, seen it, done it and have to start all over again for any kind of reason.

What about the person who always shows up to the gym, always knows everyone, talks an awful lot and always knows all the gossip, except he/she forgets to do one thing-TRAIN or at least train with a purpose that will result in a big results, these individuals are very common and are usually quite content to put up with a lack of results for years and years.

Whichever one you may be, its time to get on the right path and make a plan out right now.

Broadly speaking, you MUST do some resistance/weight training at least twice a week working the whole body, this is an absolute fundamental to put you on the path to success.

You must do some cardio at least twice and up to four times a week, this is a must for your heart and fat loss.

These two types of training work well together, and BOTH are as important as each other in terms of fantastic results. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, the people who insist only to do running, swimming or cycling for fat loss and fitness make me want to puke quite frankly. They have no real knowledge and they don’t do it for a living so their behind is not on the line every single day when it comes to advice!!!

Im here to help and much more to come tomorrow and what it really takes to get out of the quicksand of non-improvement!!!

Thursday 29th September

We talked about about the unmissable meal of the day yesterday, and its importance in every area of your life, and especially for being in shape and staying there.

I have talked about this so much over the years that many of you may be sick of it by now, but if you did pick this habit up and now consume breakfast every day without fail,  maybe all of that keeping on was worth it in the end!!!

Another meal i like to talk about and force the point home is lunch. Compliance on this one is not so popular, and is the major reason why the individuals i see at 3pm onwards don’t perform as well as they could, IF they have missed lunch or had a very low nutrient, low energy lunch!

Since i like to get the best out everyone i train, its either going to be your eating or sleeping that explains a bad workout!

Its great to see in llanelli for instance, that even the cafe’s now are making fresh nutritious food for lunch.

Of course they still do the “all day breakfasts” but the healthy eating generation is slowly overcoming the fried bread boys!

You should be able to have fresh cooked chicken in any good cafe these days, if not find somewhere else!

You should be able to have fresh fish and vegetables too, there’s no excuse for it.

If you’re having a sandwich even, ask for it to be freshly made without butter, margarine or mayo and of course NO WHITE BREAD, trust me this is NOT too much to ask and will show you are committed to healthy eating. If they refuse, then they dont have a very good business as they are ignoring your repeat custom.

I wouldn’t have thought you would be reading this if you werent committed to healthy eating, so please consider your lunch time options if you are working out tea time, i see a massive difference in the same individual all the time depending on they have had lunch.

Your choice of course but you are interested in getting into shape?!!!!!!

Wednesday 28th September

If you have tried missing breakfast in the mistaken belief that you will lose weight, you will soon be in for a big surprise!!

The theory some people use is that they never feel up for breakfast anyway, so may as well save those calories and use them for mid-morning, or even start eating lunch time. Then they eat sometimes sparingly during the afternoon and then usually get home, and then it all goes off!

The person doing this kind of eating programme is usually so ravenous by evening time as they haven’t eaten all day, they usually go mad at 6-7pm!!!

If you’re making food yourself, you will be so hungry you will grab a cheese sandwich or something while you’re cooking!

Then you will always overeat when it comes to the food you are cooking, this is because your blood sugars are so low and you are desperate to get them up again, but probably too desperate and you want to eat a massive portion. Very rarely will you be satisfied with that first portion!! Your body can only handle a certain amount of food per meal, and any over the top portion will get deposited as body fat every time!!!

So the missing breakfast technique is complete folly, and will never work long term, you may have realised that by now!

There are scientific reasons for eating breakfast anyway!

Eating breakfast counts when you eat food within one hour of getting up.

This boosts your metabolism because you’re sending your body a message that it had better assimilate that food ASAP and this gets the fat burning process going nice and early!

This helps your metabolism (the rate your body burns calories) get into overdrive early on.

There have been a massive amount of studies that show that those people who eat breakfast daily always lose more body fat and are able to MAINTAIN a healthy level of body fat for the rest of their lives.

Your choice but you know common sense works!!!

Tuesday 20th September

The rest intervals in between your exercises are one of the best ways to increase intensity in your workouts, burn body fat, build lung capacity and increase muscular endurance.

Intensity for your workouts are done in several ways, but i really trust this way of doing things as its tried and tested.

An old saying is that fitness can be defined as the ability to get up after being knocked down, and do it again straight away! This may be more of a rugby example but the example holds true.

When you transfer that to the gym or home workout imagine it like this.

You do a press up and the most people have a rest for a couple of minutes, maybe five minutes then do another exercise.

If you try to do two exercises back to back for a change, it automatically becomes harder of course, and your muscles feel much better worked, you get out of breath easier, and the whole thing becomes a much bigger effort, leading to overall better results.

This is a good way to start, press ups followed straight away by arm dips, then rest for a minute, then try another two exercises, you will be able to build up over the weeks.

Ultimately, you want to be targeting 6 exercises and up to 8 exercises in a row.

For example, if you are working at home

press ups

arm dips

alternate squat thrusts

squats

sit ups

lunges

If you were in a gym, it may be

bench press

lat pulldowns

leg press

upright rows

tricep pushdowns

curls.

This is just a small example of what you can do, and your programmes and workout ideas are only limited by your imagination!!!

Just concentrate by working on one exercise per body part and you won’t go far wrong, you can literally have a different workout every time you train!!!

So tempo of workout is everything for me, the less rest you have the better (as long as you are well conditioned first!), and once you get used to training this way, you will never go back!!!
