We have talked a little about training differently, such as bosu balls, medicine balls etc.

This is a highly productive form of training, and will guarantee good results as long as you know what you are doing.

Now its time to re-visit traditional cardio.

I’m talking rower, treadmill and bike. We also have a device called an Ultraslide at the gym, a wonderful platform that not only gives you a great workout in 5 or so minutes, but i can add substantially to your speed and agility.

So going back to the rower, first of all its important just to get used to it, rowing properly wth good form. Once you are able to row for 12-15 minutes, then its a great idea to set some targets.

2000 metres and 2500 metres in particular are my favourite targets.

These distances give you something to aim for, set your standards at and constantly let you know where you are in fitness terms. These are more intense rowing efforts, and will be far more challenging than just rowing at one easy pace.

I would row these distances just one a week maximum. They will take a lot out of you if you are putting your best efforts in. So once a week, even once a fortnight is always a good idea, and designed to keep on improving you!

Same with bikes, don’t enlessly try to stay at one boring pace. Set targets!

Keep your revolutions per minute at 80. RPM is the measurement on the bike. This has been proven to be the most efficient level to ride bikes for maximum results.

I also like to put clients on spin bikes, encouraging them to stand up on the bike for intervals.

So that could be 60 seconds sitting down and 15 seconds standing up, 60 seconds down and 15 seconds up and so on until you feel as if you have had enough. This is a very effective form of training, and as you get fitter, you can stay up riding for longer.

More on this tomorrow!

Friday, 18th January

Had to take the morning off today, most people in wales are affected this morning, and i don’t really fancy doing damage to the car as i did in heavy snow a couple of years ago, or spinning up and down hills!!!

Anyway, the options for workouts today may seem limited to you, but theres a lot more than you think.

Walking in the snow (when it stops) is very tough and can give you a great workout! Your legs will be working overtime to say the least, and you will be very glad you took time out of the house to get some fresh air, especially when you are likely to be spending more time in the house over the next couple of days!!!

The house option is always viable with a typical inside workout.

Think a simple group of 5-6 exercises.

Press ups

Arm dips

Plank

Sitting up and down on chair

Alternate squat thrusts

Do your best on these exercises for a total of 3 times. This will make a big difference and give you a top quality inside workout!

Another good reason to train is to straighten out your eating.

I have found time after time that people never eat as well if they are stuck in the house all day, AND when they don’t exercise!

You have these two potentially weight gain situations happening today, so a workout of any sort should be very welcome in your day!!

We hav zero or sub-zero temperatures the next two days, so the same principles will apply, if you want to stay in shape that is!!!

Some people love the snow, and there’s no reason to let it destroy your workouts and good eating though!!

Having done many measurements over the last week, and most people fulfilling a lot of their goals and ambitions that they made at the beginning of the year, one question comes up all the time from most individuals i train.

“How much should i expect to lose in a set period of time”?

To answer that can never be exact.

It all depends on the effort you put in, how well you are eating, how much good sleep you get, do you keep yourself hydrated, do you miss workouts regularly or do you hardly ever miss, how much intensity to you put into your workouts, are your performances constantly improving, do your drink too much alcohol too often or do you keep it in moderation, is your workout plan good or is it more haphazard, do you stay positive in times of stress or do you let stress stop you from doing your workouts?

These are all potential helps or hindrances and are are definite factors when it comes to determining progress. No two months are exactly the same and i can spend as much time councilling people on their problems sometimes as much as i do training! This is what it’s like in the real world, “life” happens and you have to keep doing your best with it!!!

Baseline figures are possible though and here’s what has been typical for me working with individuals for a lot of years now!

Waist-1.5-2 inches a month off, sometimes more

Hips-1.5-2 inches a month off, sometimes more.

Resting heart rate-2-3 beats per month down OFTEN MORE

Blood pressure-big success in getting people back into a normal healthy range

Body fat-1.8% down a month, often more!

These are exciting changes you can make your life, and all deserved to be measured!

More on this tomorrow.

Thursday, 6th December

All of us get in a rut from time to time, but we have to make sure we get right back out of it!

First of all, one of the best ways of changing is to change what you do.

For example, if you ideally do 8-10 reps of each exercise and have done for years maybe, have 4 weeks of doing 12 reps per set. You will have to reduce the weight of course, but the extra reps will bring your body a new challenge and you will be pleasantly surprised at the results!

If you do a split routine, in other words you may be doing chest and arms in one workout, shoulders and back the next and then you do this twice each which means 4 days a week with this type of training, then i always find it beneficial getting individuals on whole body workouts that can be done just twice a week with a three day gap in between. This is well proven to bring some spectacular results in a short period of time.

Do drop sets! Say you do a set of curls with your best weight, do 8 reps and instead of ending there, pick up a lighter weight and hit another 8 reps, then pick an even lighter weight up and do 6 reps with that. This will absolutely crucify your muscles and you will find that if you pick just four exercises to do this in a workout, then that will be enough to get the job done in super-quick time!!!

When is the last time you kept an eating diary? This is one of the most overlooked things i see every week, and often explains why many of us don’t get into the shape we really want! Unless we realise how much we eat, what we eat and when, its tough for us to find out whether we are sticking to our plan or not?!!

No time for getting stuck in a rut, reaching a plateau or getting medicore results, you have the chance right now to turn it all around!!

Wednesday, 28th November

The individual that you see when you first start an exercise programme is always a reflection of that person’s patterns of action, in other words their habits, the things they do day in day out without even thinking about them.

In order to completely change and tranform yourself to a better you, to a leaner, stronger and fitter you, its obvious and indeed critical that those everyday habits absolutely need to change.

The bad habits are always going to be viewed as the things that hold you back, they stop you from moving forward and achieving long term success.

If you are looking for a higher quality of life, then you had better start adopting a lot better and higher quality habits in your daily life.

The first way to do this is to recognise your lowest level habit, i am talking about the habit that drags you down the most, the one that makes you put on weight or the habit that stops you training regularly, or the habit that makes you think negatively!!!

This bad and ultimately negative habit needs to be transformed into a much more positive pattern of action!!

You will find that as your standard gets higher and higher, it will be a case of continuously raising your standards.

For example, if you currently eat badly 7 days a week, then suddenly eating well 3 days a week would have a big difference to your body.

Once you made that change, you would find that you would want to improve again. The target may well go up to eating well 6 days a week, creating another massive difference. The goals would go higher and higher, depending on what standard of life you want to achieve!! The habits would need to change upwards accordingly.

Set your stall out and make that standard in life as high as you can!!!
