The so called “ideal body” is always on our tv’s, internet and magazines. These images will always pressure us to be as good looking as possible, have a six pack, and as be lean as possible.

There are two big problems with this-all of us come born into this world in all different shapes and sizes, and I know girls who look great at 12 stone, and I know girls who look overweight at 9 stone, it all depends on the way you are made and this is why I despise faddy diets, that purely rely on your weight as a guide to your physical wellbeing and condition.

They make all these “ideal body” photographs these days from sophisticated photoshop software packages available on all computers these days.

These ideal bodies are not real, you can erase poor complexions, thighs and bums can be slimmed down by a couple of clicks, you can make hair look glossier and fuller, so what you are seeing are “created” versions of a person.

These photos create real problems for teenagers and especially those in the early 20’s.

From the age of 12 to 13, you are likely to add 25% more body fat on to your body until you are fully grown. This is why we NEVER weigh under 18’s, because you are going to weigh heavier and heavier anyway, and this is part of your natural development.

So just as most people are getting bigger, the “skinny is beautiful” message is hitting you loud and clear. This is when negative body images become very real because you think you are doing something wrong.

The facts are that what the media is telling you is WRONG and NOT REAL.

Blokes don’t get away with it either, how many times have you been told by magazines that you need a bigger chest and arms, that you need to “bulk up” and get “ripped them same time?!!! This is why an increasing number of teenagers and young men take steroids and spend endless hours in the gym thinking more is better.

This never ends well!

What about protein shakes? There is a huge cult of youngsters think that by simply taking these shakes, you will get your body of your dreams!! This is down to false marketing by the protein making firms, “before and after” photos that are grossly exaggerated and a lot of lies spread by the shops and internet firms selling these.

Protein shakes can work, but only when you diet is already good, and you are training really hard and consistent, and even then getting into great shape takes a long consistent period of doing everything right.

How many ads do you see when beautiful people, with great skin and bodies are skipping down the road laughing and giggling all the time, like their life is fun

ALL the time, then you wonder why your life isn’t like that all the time?

Then you may think, that if you are as lean, as tanned then you would be popular and happy go lucky too and have a great life?

This is exactly what the advertisers WANT you to think!

What all this means is that you are comparing yourself to a fantasy, and you are never going to reach this goal which DOES NOT even EXIST!

Maybe its time to stop buying these fashion mags or watching these online sites, and focus on who you are on the INSIDE!

Your body is only ONE part of you, and you have a million other things to offer.

Of course its great to want to look good, dress your best and have a good appearance, this is what we promote after all.

I try to do the same myself (with varying results!) but I also like a beer once a week, ice cream now and again and I don’t spend hours a day obsessing about exercise and starving myself all week to allow me to do that!

So its great to want to look your best, but the images of role models you see in the media only exist in the computer of the professional who is using photo shop packages, so accept where you are, who you are and set realistic healthy goals that you CAN reach AND look your very best!

Your results will be much more long lasting!

A recurring question I seem to have all the time would be the one “which diet should I go on?! Especially this time of year!

We talked about lifestyle changes yesterday, and how important it was to exercise regularly, however simple a programme.

YOU ARE NOT changing your lifestyle if you are going on the “faddy diets” that are trying to rip you off at this time of year! You are trying a short term fix that may lose weight initially, but is very likely to cause you long term misery!!

This is not just my opinion, this is the opinion of the vast majority of individuals I have met over the years who have been through it, and come out the other side with all the weight back on and their long term confidence and self-belief in tatters! It is also the opinion of doctors who have studied this scientifically and done numerous in depth studies on these so called diets.

Most people know by now what I think of these so called “wonder diets”!

Studies over the last few years show and confirm that 97 PER CENT, yes 97 per cent of people who embark on these diets put ALL the weight back on, and 5% MORE than when they first started.

Then there’s the powder and bars diets, which seem to cost a fortune, and again promise you the earth, and yes you lose weight to start with, but inevitably the weight comes back on extremely quickly in most cases.

Again, this is not a lifestyle change!!! You are not educating yourself about eating healthy, natural food and you are not caring what’s going on inside your body and the destructive habits you are adopting.

Fortunately, people selling you these destructive diets are not in the health business very long, and often go on to another scam selling more rubbish.

Unfortunately though, there is often a queue of people waiting to take their place and so the process continues!

There is a solution and you need to get back to shopping for healthy, natural food and making that food as attractive as possible so it becomes an everyday event.

More on this to come.

To those of you who have “over-achieved” in 2013, and there have been many of you, its time to re-assess what your programme looks like, what your eating programme looks like, and how much your goals have shifted during all of this process.

Many of you in 2013 will have realized that you CAN lose 8, 10, 12, 14 even 20 inches off your waist if you put your mind to it. I have detailed evidence of that as you will know.

Losing 5 to 10 stone sounded unbelievable, but many of you have achieved this and are rightly proud of yourself (although weight is not the only thing).

Its easy to coast for a bit after all of this transformation in your life, but now is the time to pat yourself on the back one last time, and finally draw a line under a magical, extremely difficult time and rewarding in your life.

To get to where you once only imagined, and finally get to your new goal of looking fantastic compared to anyone, you have to re-assess and aggressively break down the limitations you may previously had on your training.

Here’s the three things you must do/keep doing;

a. You MUST weight train or do bodyweight exercises. This is an extremely powerful way to rev up your metabolism to the max, and totally reshape your body once again! 3 times a week is my recommendation.

b. You must keep eating natural healthy food and in its natural state where possible. Drink 1-5-2 litres of water a day. Think of how your insides will benefit, and the way you look and feel will be upgraded several levels again. Don’t fall for faddy diets, shakes and bars diets, everyone knows they bring long term misery. The sooner these products were banned the better full stop!

c. Lift your expectiations! Whilst you are having all sorts of complements from everyone, you need to target a new version of yourself that’s going to be even more rewarding for you, an even more athletic version that is capable of much more again. Some of you have already gone onto 10k’s, triathlon’s and marathon’s over the last couple of years. It doesn’t have to be an athletic achievement, all it has to be is something personal to you that really drives you first thing in the morning when its freezing, dark and wet!

No time to waste so writing down your future goals right now would be a great start!

Its great too see so many of you are not tempted like a lot of people to take short cuts, and follow so many easy but non-productive ways to do things that will end up in failure.

I seriously think that the true hero’s are the ones who can train throughout the year, never miss a workout unless they are ill and always look for improvements and consistent progress, this is exactly the right philosophy to have!

These super-dedicated people ARE out there and you have proven the good effects that regular workouts and good food will have on your body.

I get questions all the time about the best training programme, whether the following fads like the power plate vibration system is any good, whether the masai based trainers with the big heel’s are truly the answer, whether the vibration belt’s you put across your stomach really work, whether the latest new gym opening is really going to work this time, whether the latest fitness dvd is any good, whether the 2 minutes a day workout can really change your life, whether the flimsy machines you see on the shopping channels are really any good?!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know how I am going to answer those.

These are the questions I always get and they get the same answers!

Forget all of those usual faddy false promises that faddy diets make too after Christmas, all they bring is long term misery because 97% of them fail and you put all the weight back on, and 5% more according to all leading scientific research into that “industry”!

If you show up 80% or more of the time for training, you WILL progress.

If you eat well and healthily 80% or more of the time, you WILL progress.

If you train with purpose 80% or more of the time, you WILL progress. You know this works and most of you have experienced great results.

Why look for questions and answers and try and re-invent the wheel when you know this will work very well for you-HARD WORK that is?!! There’s no way around it.

A week off can turn to a month off, and this can turn into a huge break. Lets not go there especially with Christmas coming up, NOW is the time to make the big physical improvements, and not after Christmas when you can hardly breathe because of the cold air and all the weight you have put on!

That’s why you can be a 52 week hero, that person who achieves that (allowing for the odd cold/illness, holiday etc) really is a hero in my book. When you think about it, how many people do you actually know who make that kind of commitment in their life to anything?

Someone who achieves this deserves all the benefits they get, because they quietly work at achieving at being the best they can be.

The time for talking a good game is over, its time to go for it for the next six weeks and do your best no matter what.
