We try to make you accountable for your efforts by our constant measuring process. This shows if you are improving, falling back and what rate of progress to expect in the future if you keep eating and training like you currently are.

All of this will be a proven way of success.

An excellent way of strengthening your longer term success is having an “accountability partner”. In life, you have friends, family and work colleagues who will often share in your experiences in getting fit and healthy. This is your “circle of support”.

If this circle of support is filled with negative people, who don’t offer support when things get tough and encourage you to go back to your old ways, then your chances of failure go dramatically up. The easiest thing will be to quit because these people usually never exercises themselves, never eat well and will want you to stay at their level.

This is why it’s important to have one very positive person at least who will go through it all with you, one person who has your real interests at heart, and will support and encourage you even when you want to throw in the towel.

They will offer realism when you are only pretending to try and you could do better, they will offer support to help make sure you actually make it to your training sessions, and they will celebrate in your success when it happens.

I find that if the person I train is living in a household where one partner eats and drinks rubbish, then that person will always struggle. The entire household needs to support each other, because if the supermarket shop is full of sugary and fatty foods, don’t pretend that those foods will not be eaten at some stage, because they will!

A healthy lifestyle cannot be a short term commitment, and if everyone buys into it then the household will feel so much better that it will never want to go back to the old unhealthy lifestyle anyway. Working as a team is always better than fighting against others who aren’t supportive of your goals to be fit and healthy.

If you are start off in school in year 1 and you start learning basics, then it’s a natural progression to move on to new stuff pretty much year in year out, and often from week to week even, all of which are stepping stones to your development.

If you use this analogy in relation to exercise, then it should work the same way but often in practice it never does. Most gyms are not accountable to their members, because most people’s experience of gyms is being shown around the gym in broad terms, given a sheet of paper they give to everyone, and then forgotten about and left to their own devices once the direct debit is signed.

How many people do you know when they begin to exercise keep on doing the same old thing at the same level of intensity (or lack of!). It’s heartbreaking when you see this going on for long periods of time, and these individuals never progressing the way they should.

Proper exercise technique can take a lot of time, not only to show it but make sure good form continues to happen.

It’s human nature to go back to old ways, and when you exercise going back to old ways can mean sloppy form and potential injury, and definitely no progress.

It’s also human nature to find the easiest way of doing things.

Going through the motions in gyms is what most people do. Picking the more difficult movements, which require a high amount of energy just to do them are unfortunately what most individuals avoid, leading to mediocre results and a lack of general fitness. You commit to spend time in the gym, so why not make it as productive as possible?

Your programme needs to change regularly if you really want to seriously change the way you look and perform regularly, you need a few different types of workouts that will challenge your body to adapt, and you need to totally get out of your comfort zone, because your body requires a different stimulus all the time to keep on progressing.

See your training as a constant progression, and not just training and getting through it for the sake of it. It makes the difference between being a constant success story or just drifting through your programme without any kind of meaningful results to show for it.

One of the best results you can hope for with your training is to actually change your body, and not just lose weight and get smaller.

Most people who train with us getting a different sort of question asked to them once they make dramatic improvements.

People don’t just ask if they have lost weight, they ask IF THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING OUT! Looking as if you train means that you have put a lot of hard work in, have eaten right and you have kept on improving over a long period of time.

This is a very pleasing question because you will know at that precise moment that you are looking healthy and fit!

Looking athletic for the first time is not only a great achievement, actually “feeling fantastic” usually goes hand in hand with being in this kind of great shape.

Another great benefit is your favourite clothes will become “wearable” once again.

Everyone has their favourite jeans or their favourite dress or suit, that most of you may have given up on wearing ever again.

That feeling of being able to wear that special item again is a big confirmation of your progress, and a very strong sign that you are back to your best shape once again.

Your new found shape and fitness will always transform into daily life too. Developing “real fitness” means that the way you move every day will become better. Anything physical will become no problem, you will have unbelievable energy levels meaning you will want to do much more with your day, you will sleep much better and you will have a far more positive outlook on life.

This is why its always better to train to improve your performance, and not simply go through the motions.

It will be a lot of work, but follow through on your plan and you will find out that anyone can do it with enough support and sustained effort.

Monday, 19th May

There are all different types of people who join gyms, and whoever it may be, it’s important to get them back down to basics to make sure they improve.

People who dabble in this and that, need to start buckling down to a proper programme and develop real strength and endurance.

For example, you often get individuals who have tried a bit of everything.

They have done weight training before at times, they sometimes have used the latest machines and convinced themselves that somehow they were “better”, they may have tried endurance training such as longer runs and longer cycles and bought all the latest kit and looked like a pro, they may have tried yoga and pilates, and more than likely swore blind that each of them was the best form of training at one particular time.

These people are willing to try anything, and many of these individuals have developed some strength and some endurance, which is a great start when it comes to our programme.

However, when it comes down to it, they usually have never done enough training to develop the skill, strength and power that comes with more specialist programmes that REALLY transforms you!
When many people come to us, they lack the strength of someone who trains consistently and has developed real strength.
Their tendons and ligaments haven’t developed the strength to learn a new way of training.

Our programmes are transparent, well-thought out and may look easy on paper.

If they were really easy to do though, you are doing them wrong or not putting enough into them!

We build everyone up gradually, and with time you will develop into an impressive athlete.

To start with though, you have to learn to do things right, to follow through with a programme for the first time ever, and to test yourself constantly.

You have to take your nutrition seriously, you have rest properly and you have to come in with a positive attitude.

Nobody gives a damn what you wear in the gym or how much make up you have on, but you better be prepared to work hard!

Some words that belong in the 70’s and 80’s but still prevail today are the words “toning”, “shaping” and “lengthening” your muscles to get a “sleek” look with your body.

Your muscles have a genetically pre-determined shape, so these adverts you see trying to sell you some kind of “lengthen your muscles in a sleek way in a ridiculously short period of time” and make your muscles “long and lean just like a dancers” are guilty not only of false advertising, they are SCIENTIFICALLY WRONG!

Each of you will end up with a different shape, the best shape your body can be, your muscles will look better if you use strength training, and your body fat will reduce considerably if you eat a lot better too. This is what gives you “a great look” and will make you look “sleek”.

Getting into a healthy range of body fat will make sure you look your best.

A lot of times I have measured several women in the same excellent range of body fat, but each of them have had a different shape but all looked great and they felt amazing.

By the way, they do look lean, they are NEVER bulky and look athletic and very feminine always.

The propaganda you often get from people promising longer, leaner muscles for your body don’t understand your body at all, and have definitely never studied it. How many times have you heard that pilates and yoga will give you that long, slender look and using WEIGHTS will just make you bulky?

This statement is one of the greatest LIES you will hear about exercise, this statement is always from people who don’t know a thing about exercise science, who have never trained a lot of people and shouldn’t comment on matters they have no real experience on. Pilates and yoga WILL be good for your body, but please don’t try to lie to me that weights are going to make you bulky and be a negative in some way!!!!

If you train your muscle, saying it’s going to become long and lean is like saying all of our workouts are going to make you several inches taller, absolutely impossible, your muscles cannot respond that way.

Men and women are guilty of trying to look like someone they never will. Getting a grip of reality is vital when you start an exercise programme, and choosing the best way to accomplish your goals always involves not only strength training, but our speed and agility work, balance and coordination work too.

This is really the way to look incredible, to perform at your best in training AND daily life, and feel fantastic on the inside and outside! Your muscles and shape are unique to you and you only, so celebrate the way your body looks.
