Tuesday, 8th January

Following the theme of getting right back into it this week, let’s move on from the importance of getting a good shop in to preparing yourself for training.

Once you have decided which way you are going to get fit and healthy, you had better avoid these pitfalls which are guaranteed to disrupt and sometimes stop your progress completely.

Make sure you wear clothes that are not too tight to bend and move around in, wear training clothes that you are comfortable in, rather than trying to follow the latest fashions.

Wear good running shoes-even if you have no plans to run! Not wearing the right footwear or wearing training shoes over 6 months old can lead to a series of problems. Many knee, ankle and back problems can be traced to poor footwear choices. I recommend running shoes purely because they offer the most protection, they tend to receive the most research in terms of money spent on them by big companies, and will generally do a great job of protecting you.

Buy a decent pair but you don’t need to spend too much. Last season’s pair will be fine and usually greatly reduced. When you buy them mark off on the calendar when you need to change them next, always 6 months from the date of purchase. This will become an excellent habit for you and help you avoid needless injuries that can seriously derail all your hard efforts to get into great shape!

Drink enough water throughout the day. Not keeping hydrated is a dangerous practice when you want to get into shape. Sip water throughout your day and you won’t be going to the toilet all the time. Your body will feel better, maintain its core temperature better and actually make you feel like training because your awareness and energy levels will be right up there. Drinking water through your training session is vital too, it will keep you cooled down and help you perform much better.

One big no no is iced water! You wouldn’t put freezing water into your car engine and putting freezing water into your body whilst exercising can be extremely dangerous! Your body likes working out in a healthy temperature range, it doesn’t like to heat up too quickly or cool down too fast!

More tomorrow!

New Year’s Eve, 2012!

Exactly the time today to make new year’s resolutions!! Not the kind that everyone breaks or that are unrealistic of course, but ones that are absolutely sustainable and will work!!

Committing yourself to eat as much food that is fresh and natural, and plain without artificial sugar added has to be a worthwhile goal. I tuly believe that would be a major worthwhile new year’s resolution for you!!

Comitting yourself to being MORE active would be as much as most of you can realistically do. The time for setting olympic records may be over for most people, but fitting in an extra workout per week is not really that difficult to do surely?

Committing yourself to being better this time next year is something i have always aimed at doing, and it tends to work. This way you tend to do the little things each day, each week, each year to get yourself better, stronger, healthier and fittter, and it can really pay BIG dividends for you trust me!!!

Commit yourself to doing less of things that are bad for you, and you know which things they are by now surely?
Drink a little less alcohol, drop one day of alcohol consumption and no more binge drinking!!! How about eating less junk in the week, and serving a wholesome meal EVERY evening after work and really treating your body as something special and important to you.

These four commitments will be exactly what you should be looking at over the next twelve months, and ensure you WILL be better all over this time NEXT year!!!

Don’t fall for the fads and scam merchants, and please save your money and invest it on things that are really going to help you and your health!!!

Have a great new year’s eve, enjoy yourselves and get ready to hit it big in 2013!!!

Friday, 28th December

Glad to be right back into it all and get a great couple of workouts in yesterday, and some today too!!!

The great energy that these bring can be fantastic, and being back in routine again will make you realise all of the energy you have been missing, especially when you were not training, and eating badly.

For all of you who are back on track, or at least partially so, will know what i am talking about!

For those of you who are yet to get into it, i strongly encourage you to do so. The new year is going to hit you like a truck otherwise. The last thing you will feel like is making a flying start to the new year when you feel all groggy and sluggish. Feeling this way can give you a major disadvantage in anything you want to do.

Just think of what job you have? You have to give effort to make a living, and if you have no energy, that’s going to be a challenge.

The prospect also of losing the body fat and weight in general can be daunting. That’s why once you decide to muster up all of that effort, it’s important to make the right choices!!

They were talking on the radio this morning about the latest seaweed diet! Apparently Victoria beckham is an endorser, as well as Brittany Spears. Seaweed is a superfood but relying on seafood to drop all your weight and feel better has to be one of the most desperate measures you can undertake?!!!

What’s wrong with eating sensible natural food, in moderation? What’s wrong with drinking enough water at regular intervals throughout the day? What’s wong with getting enough sleep and not drinking too much alcohol? What happened to these reliable common sense methods that really work ALL of the time?!!!

I urge to avoid the faddy diets, the weight loss clubs who only help for a very short period, then they pile all your weight back on (plus 5% more according to reliable research). You should know by now that these products make me feel sick, and they should be exposed for the frauds they are, and the long term misery they create.

Lighter life, herbalife etc? The ultimate waste of money and con artists! Save your money now and use your common sense this year to avoid these disgusting products!!

Monday, 24th December

Christmas Eve is finally here, and a very busy time is about to kick off for a lot of us!

One unknown fact is that i know quite a lot of people who will/indeed have trained today already with me and on their own at the gym, there will be a few on christmas day and particularly boxing day. These are the people who still don’t want to pile the pounds on, they don’t want to have a shortness of breath from eating all the rubbish/fast food, and they generally don’t want to waste a lot of the hard work they have put in all year long!

A piece of breaking news from the states on the weekend i think a lot of you would be interested in. Herbalife, the company that promises quick weight loss and apparently “everyone was doing it”, has hit massive problems.

Herbalife is listed on the US stock exchange and has been “shorted” by two very big name analysts and investors. “Shorting” is when you predict the stock will go DOWN instead of up and the analysts have a new stock target price of ZERO dollars. They claim the stock is a ponzi scheme that will end up losing investors all of their money. One big pyramid scheme they say.

Not only this, but herbalife has been found selling their products in starving african countries, where you thought a weight loss product would be needed the least!! It seems as if they are having problems ethically and financially. Good on these stock market investors exposing such a company.

I have been banging on for years about how these companies fleece would be weight loss victims out of their hard earned monies. The same goes for weight loss clubs and the whole industry is fake and a sham and i urge you to show common sense in the new year and avoid these charlatans.

You can’t beat good natural food in sensible portions, with a bit of what you fancy in moderation.

Enjoy christmas and see you for more later on in the week!!!

Tuesday, 11th December

A very relevant question today is from a lady who is wondering if she cannot get to the gym before christmas, will the weight come piling back on after making outstanding progress lately? And is there any alternative?

First of all, in replying to this, i have said many times that i think it is an extremely bad idea to stop exercising before christmas for all sorts of reasons that have been well documented on here. So let’s get that out of the way and i don’t want to keep repeating myself!!

Anyway, let’s look at the solution so you don’t put the weight on.

Option number one is trying to make your sessions no matter what! 15 minute blasts are far better than wondering what might have been! Anyone who has done them with me will know their value.

Option two is if you really can’t make the session, then you should workout at home no matter what!!
How long does it take to put a pair of shorts on and tshirt, and just go for it.

The workout

Just pick 5- 6 exercises.
Example

Press ups

Arm dips

sitting up and down on chair

alternate squat thrusts

plank

try your best on each exercise for a maximum best

So if you do 20 press ups, then your workout figure should be 10 when doing 3 lots of it.

For example
Press ups max-20
then workout number should be 10

arm dips max-10
then workout number should be 5
and so on

So you do the workout by doing all the exercises one after the other, have a rest, then do the other two lots for a total then of 3 lots.

This should last for around 20 minutes in total.

This time investment should be available to everyone, and will also have the added benefit of making you eat better, because you will not want to blow all that hard work!!

Hope this helps a lot of people in the same situation!
