With the temperatures finally rising, there is even greater opportunity to train hard and expand your options! This is what you would think anyway.

My experience with people i bump into in general life says that people usually get diverted in the warmer weather, and the summer months are not usually the best throughout the year. My own experience with the people i actually train is that because they have a good level of commitment, and i do a lot of early morning sessions, then the weather becomes less of a factor and my summer months of training individuals can be very productive indeed.

I do a lot more cycling sessions in the summer. I run more in the summer, i even do swimming sessions sometimes in the summer! I do some hiking up mountains in the summer due to the much more pleasant conditions, and i still manage to get a lot of indoor work done too. I love the variety at this time of year due to the extra light, the better surface running conditions and generally everywhere is so much more accessible!

So the message here today is to get away from thinking that its “too warm” to train, or you could be doing “other things””, its time to be more positive and realise how many more different options you now have in your training, and have the courage of your convictions and actually do them, instead of talking a good game!

Plan your training sessions in advance, work hard when you get to your training venue, follow through on what you planned to do, drink enough water and make sure you have some available at all times, and eat well afterwards.

This is a successful way to do it, then keep planning your sessions and exactly what you intend to do.

Don’t gie up on yourself, recognise what all this nice weather has to offer and embrace it for much better results!!

Internal changes to your body are the true measures of success, without these changes your body would not be able to perform in the way you would like.

If your heart is not functioning properly, then there is no way you can perform in the way you would want. You couldn’t test yourself in any sort of way, and you will always be worrying about what could go wrong with you body, instead of what was going right!

There’s nothing worse than admitting defeat with your body, and claiming that you can never even train hard anymore! Worse than this, there is something worse-telling yourself that you can’t even train anymore AT ALL!!

These things tend to happen when you don’t look after yourself, and this is why internal health is vital, even though you cannot see it on the outside!!

I have met an awful lot of people who have had their lives curtailed by their health, some through no falt of their own.

If you can do something about it though, you had better get on it straight away and go through some tests.

Cholesterol tests, blood pressure, resting heart rate tests are all things you can sort out very quickly.

Please do it today and treat your internal health as an absolute priority, this way the way you look and feel will change almost immediately with a sensible eating and exercise plan.

Leaving yourself no other option but to succeed is crucial to your success, and a big secret to achieving for the long term too.

If you give yourself too many options sometimes, then you’re always going to struggle.

For instance, if you are planning to do a workout tonight, and you start going through your mind that “maybe” you should leave it tonight, “after all you have to get the shopping, cut the lawn, clean the kitchen etc”, then the workout can easily be left.

Then you may say lets do it tomorrow? Then what happens is that maybe someone has invited you out, invited you for a drink, for pizza or just to have a chat, then the workout suddenly gets moved to Thursday.

Then one of your children tells you that they have parents evening and you HAVE to go of course! Then it gets to Friday, and then you come out with the oldest excuse in the book, “no point in starting back on a Friday, I’ll start back next week”!!!

This is a great example of you not prioritizing your workouts enough, and you can see it wont take much for “other” things to take priority!!!

The basic message of this is to put your workouts as something you MUST do (recipe for success), rather something you plan to do AS LONG as something else doesn’t come up (recipe for failure).

Ask yourself would you miss an appointment with the doctor, dentist or solicitor? Your workouts need to be considered just as important, as you will be looking after your health and there’s nothing more important.

Prioritise your exercise today and you will automatically get much better results!

Friday, 10th May

If you’re tired of your week by friday, then today is the ideal time to try something different!

Throw what you planned to do in the bin, and do something you weren’t planning to do.

For example, if you are a big weight trainer, and like nothing more than benching big, working chest and arms on a friday, then you should be really changing it tonight to do something different.

You could try a spinning bike for a change, how about doing a heavy punch bag session, what about finding out how well the rowing machine can work you, or how about doing some speed work outside?

You may well avoid these exercises because you are comfortable with what you are doing right now, and maybe have done for years and years.

If this is the case, then all the more reason to change!

Most people are scared of change because they do not really know what’s going to happen.

I can assure though that if you do take my advice and change right now, you will benefit in all sorts of ways.

You will develop new all round fitness levels, your lung capacity will get better, you variety of workouts wil explode, and you will likely enjoy your training a lot more than previously!!

This method of changing things up will serve you well, and keep you from hitting training plateau’s that are all too common in most people’s training lives.

So friday is the perfect time to change it all up, be aggressive with your training again, feel rejuvenated and more optimistic about your future progress all in one go!!

How to get your eating right

Write down what you eat and when/why you eat it, or what your drink and why you eat it. If you do this you can really see what you’re eating and drinking, how much more than you may need and what stresses are causing you do it. Once you know where you are, then you will know how not to get into situations in the future that destroy your progress.

Accurate food records for 3 days are the quickest way to fix your eating. If you are stressed, hungry or bored, there will be issues when you make food choices. Write down how long you are training for too because you will need more food on those days, and you cannot train on fresh air alone.

Are you skipping breakfast, nibbling on rubbish all day, overeating in the evening and late at night because you are so hungry you have to eat much bigger amounts of food than normal?

Do you entertain yourself with food when you are bored? Perhaps you reward yourself with chocolate when you’re stressed?

You may need to watch your moods when you eat, most people will feel better when they eat a tub of ice cream initially, but it does nothing for anxiety and stress you may be experiencing in your life. The problems that made you stressed in the first place are never really solved by the ice cream, and you just added a new one of piling on body fat if you do this regularly! You need to avoid this vicious circle.

If you eat food on a regular basis OTHER than giving you energy and health, then you need to recognize that food should be seen as fuel and not as an emotional crutch to get you through some stressful times.

Food becomes dangerous in terms of weight gain and in terms of worsening your internal health when it is eaten for entertainment, reducing stress or just making you feel more comfortable.

It’s a fact that no amount of food solves any problems.

For example, if you eat lightly during the day, and eat excessively at night like a lot of people I start with do, then try and change it right away by having a bigger breakfast, a decent lunch and lighter evening meal, with mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. This way of eating will give you far more energy, keep you feeling fuller for longer, make you less prone to have sugary/fatty snacks and transform your body every single week. This is the way your become far more efficient in the way you create energy for yourself, burn fat, and create lean muscle which in turn boosts your metabolism greatly.

You won’t feel like eating late, and you’re going to be far more in control of everything so give it a go for better results.
