Wed 22nd Oct

I had a late morning dental appointment today, as a follow up to emergency treatment two weeks ago. I like the people in the dentist but I am often nervous about going, and don’t really want to go, but I KNOW I HAVE TO!!!

Two weeks ago, I tried sensodyne tooth paste but didn’t work, I tried special mouthwash but didn’t work, so there came the time when I had to get it done PROPERLY. And I am VERY GLAD I got it done today, because if you leave problems start and build up with your teeth, then real problems will only keep developing!

As a gym, our aim is to guarantee that process for you, do it right

When we do our programmes, it’s a question of balancing everything out.

Have we got enough mobility in there? Have we got enough strength work? What about endurance? And we have better not forget all the new balance work that will test you in new ways!

Doing things the right way guarantees high levels of fitness for you, high levels of functionality in life, and a feeling that your body has never been better.

Throw in all the extra stuff we are now doing with recovery, and it all adds up to peace of mind that you are performing to your best levels, and after all that effort, you are RECOVERING in the best way possible too.

There are many people who don’t go to gyms because they have an injury, and that can be understandable because nobody helps them in most places.

Ours is different and you know it and it can make all the difference.

A problem with your shoulder? Then you need to get to the root of the problem and eventually strengthen it. Of course it will take some time but it’s a thousand times better than just sitting in the house and hoping total rest will magically fix it.

A more active recovery is always going to heal you a lot quicker.

If you have a bad knee for example, you have to find out exactly where. 100% of the time that knee joint will be getting weaker if you don’t start strengthening the muscles, ligaments and tendons around it.

Initially any injury will require rest, especially in the first 48-72 hours when ice is usually an excellent idea, but after that a more targeted and progressive approach will help dramatically.

If the muscle you have hurt is weak, you will not be able to stabilise it, a weak muscle will never stabilise  I have to repeat especially in the knee, shoulder, ankle and hip.

You see some tiny dumbbells in the gym in the newly created rack in the second room. They are there for a reason. To initiate a recovery no mater what the injury and to start the healing process, to pump fresh blood into the affected area which will be amazing for recovery, and eventually turn the recovery stage into the performance stage.

Add onto the fact that the best treatment for injury is prevention, when we bring out a new programme, prevention is massive part of the equation, as well as performance so be sure you are executing a well rounded programme every time you come into the gym.

Monday, 9th September

Monday’s blog is as important to me as it is to everyone else. I always go on about the importance of starting Monday with a bang, and its vital for me to get that spirit going for myself too.

My Monday morning starts at 420am when I get up for breakfast and prepare for my first session. I know that if I show up for that first session a bit tired, a bit sleepy and in general “not up for it” then I know I am not serving that individual who is paying me to train them.

So my preparation has to be good and methodical and it all starts with an early night on Sunday and a good breakfast of porridge, water and one coffee to get me going.

Once I get into my first session, I know I am set up for the day and revved up to perform at my best.

I know once I get my first run of the day under my belt, I feel so much more energized and the energy and adrenalin soon starts to flow at a rate of knots!

This is why I tell people all the time, and the ones that are new to exercise especially, that you actually CREATE energy and future energy by exercising and eating well. It may seem that you are burning energy up by exercising, but once your body recovers, you will feel so much better after you have had a bath or shower.

It’s the constant regularity of your exercise programme that will literally make you feel better by the week. This is the addictive feeling that people enjoy so much from exercise, and this is why practically every single person I have spoken to feels so much better from exercise, and never wants to let that emotional uplift disappear!

So here we are at another Monday, so please try and make it happen today not only to get into shape and set the week up nicely, but to create an abundance of energy for yourself every day this week!

Tuesday, 9th July

The temperature has relented just a little bit today, which makes it a little bit more enjoyable to train in than yesterday’s conditions which reminded me of training in some kind of oven!

If you watched andy murray on Sunday, then you will have seen someone who takes full advantage of the heat and the humid conditions.

When he first broke on the scene, he tried playing a 5 setter versus Nalbandian. Despite taking a two set lead, he then run out of steam and was overcome by his far more experienced opponent.

Murray knew then that he needed to be able to cope with the heat and all the demands it brought.

He employed a big team of nutritionist, fitness trainers, yoga teachers, psychologists to get him into the real big time.

A key factor was re-locating to Miami. Anyone who has been there realizes that you are unlikely to get anywhere so humid as Miami, especially in the summer, this is where murray still calls his training base, and has obviously benefitted immensely from it!

He of course plays tennis all over the world, and although the rumoured 50 degrees on court was tortuous even for him, he at least has a lot of experience of those conditions and his experience of it was critical when it came to the crunch.

He was seen putting ice on his shoulders and neck in between games, he took longer to get out of his chair, he made sure he was fully hydrated and the extreme amount of work he put into his body paid off even against a supremely fit champion like Novak Djokovic!

So as we feel a little sorry for ourselves training through the extreme heat (for us anyway), we shou.ld realize that as long as we are sensible, and we take the proper precautions, we should be able to work our way through it, and year in year out, we are likely to get better in how we deal with it just like our new Wimbledon champion!!!

Thursday, 8th November

Short termism is never usually a good idea, but there is one area where you may need to reconsider!

One of the biggest reasons i have found that people fail in their health and fitness plans is sometimes looking TOO far ahead.

If you tell people from the outset that they HAVE to eat well for the rest of their lives, they HAVE to exercise for a certain amount every day for the rest of their lives, then the reaction usually can be somewhat negative to say the least!!!

When i have set different challenges up for people i train, the overall best participant is usually the one who tells me that the key to success for them was simply taking one day at a time.

They found that even looking one week ahead was often too much of a challenge. One day was the most they could think of, as there was so much going on in the rest of their lives, they didnt was diet and exercise to overtake their lives!

Taking one day at a time also helps you get into routine, and keep routine.

By that i mean you get used to eating well and exercising sooner than you think, and it can get an addictive feeling.

You will recognise the different feeling you get between being idle and exercising.

You will know the feeling you get when you eat well, and when you eat junk!

So what you are doing the whole time is presenting an alternative lifestyle to yourself. One is refreshing, makes you look and feel better. The other makes you feel lethargic the whole time, and makes your appearance deteriorate pretty quickly, as well as hurt your internal health, probably the biggest consequence of an unhealthy lifestyle!!!

Practice the one day at a time theory, it seems to work in a big way for your longer term success too!!!
