Wednesday, 5th December

So we have discovered there are two sides of the fence in december, those who have given up and those who remain on track to have their best december in years!

The best thing about that statement is that as long as you continue to read, its never going to be too late to get out of the “given up” crowd!!

We have talked a lot about food, but how’s your workouts going?

Are you going through the motions? Are you watching the clock all the way though, can’t wait to get it over with?

If you are one of these individuals, then please stop what you are doing right now, there is much more to learn about your workouts, there is much more to learn about what it means to be fit and how you manage your heart and lung capacity, there is much more to learn about creating a lot more variety and interest in your workouts, and you ought not to waste one more day!!!

Not having a plan and not having any standards in your workouts is a sure fire path to failure, and at best mediocre results so its time for you to pick up the pace!!!!!

Try moving away from doing the treadmill and bike for example, these two things can be excellent parts of your workouts, but there’s more, much more in fact!!!

Please make sure you do an all over strength/resistance workout twice a week with a 2-3 day gap on between, gap in between each set needs to be eventually 45 seconds.

Don’t spend more than 45 minutes in the gym, one hour very maximum. You can have some great workouts in 20-30 minutes if you hit it hard and have a good plan!!!

Always use proper form, no cheating, no swinging and no bad form on any exercise!

Don’t train to impress others, try and impress yourself by constantly improving each week on one exercise. Little improvements over a few weeks can lead to one massive improvement, you know you have it in you!!!

We are going to concentrate on really shaking up your programme this december, no “settling” for mediocrity, get into the crowd who are interested in their strongest december yet!!! You will enjoy christmas far more when it comes and you will be glad you have put the big effort in!!!

Monday June 6th

Monday starts off with a few of you struggling with aches and pains of different kinds, the big question is can you still have a successful week? The big answer must be of course you can!!!

For example, if you have a bad knee, theres a million other things you can do APART from running, which is guaranteed to put further stress on an already bad situation!! You have to work around it!

I like to totally go against the “no pain no gain” saying, in fact whoever made it up needs to be shot!!

If you have a bad knee, you should pick activities that WILL NOT put any strain on your knee at all.

Options include working on the bike on flat surfaces, or working on a stationery bike, the rowing machine MAY be okay if you can pull more with your upper body rather than your lower body.

You can do lots of weight training exercises that DO NOT put any strain on your knees whatsoever, this can be quite easy to do, and still means you can have a very intense workout, which will be highly beneficial to you of course. I have been in this situation many times and the ability to “work around” injuries will be one of the most valuable things you can have.

If you have a bad back, this tends to be tougher because your back is involved in everything you do. I would recommend some swiss ball work, which can help your back a lot and there are numerous options on this ball. If you can cycle again on a flat surface, AND you have no pain whatsoever, i would work at a moderate intensity and you WILL again get some seriously good benefits from this. I would avoid any weight training with a bad back.

The bottom line is that are numerous alternatives of training even if you have injuries, you just have to be more selective and train smarter. We all have aches and pains from time to time, but they are definitely not a reason to give up on yourself as many do.

Its not about whether you get knocked down, its whether you get up again so your choice entirely!!!

January 4th 2010

Most people are back in school or work today, and are struggling to come to terms with the realities of a dark and wet january! Add to this the increase in VAT, increase in rail fees, national insurance and the cost of just about everything going up right across the board. People as a result are likely to spend less as a result so George Osborne better know something we don’t, just as soon as he’s come back from his £11,000 skiing holiday. On average, there must be many conservative and liberal voters reading this so you can’t really complain, as you knew this in advance. The Americans on the other hand are spending their way out of this crisis, and according to most analysts and economists, it seems to be working! Whatever side of the fence you’re on, hope everything works out well for you this year!!!!

To avoid turning this into such political debate, this is an excellent time to prioritise your money into healthy quality foods and not waste it on alcohol and fast food full of sugar and saturated fat. What a perfect excuse to get into shape and give yourself a flying start into january!!

Times like these dictate that your spending gets scrutinised more than ever before, so every penny counts so give yourself an old test to see if you’re spending wisely. If the food you puchase is natural and good for you, then its worth buying because its going to make you feel good, look good, give you lots more energy and therefore make you far more positive.

If you keep spending money on junk, and fill your body full of rubbish, then you must really have more money than sense, and these spending cuts are not really affecting you. As a family, its our responsibility to get as much good food in as possible, there’s no room for rubbish anymore, but theres always room for better quality foods full of high quality nutrients that are going to boost our immune system and keep us well prepared for the cold months still ahead!

This year is going to be about much more than losing weight, its going to be about being the best you can be in the harshest economic environment since the 1930’s!!! With a bit of though, it can be a huge year for you discovering what really matters!!!
