Tuesday 7th June

We talked about yesterday the ability to work around injuries, instead of working through them which tends to make the injuries worse of course. Being flexible and being able to change your programme is very important.

The other issue is recovery and how important sleep and eating well is.

If you eat a variety of fresh natural foods, this usually means you will be ingesting a lot of vital nutrients that your body needs and when your body is down, such as when you are injured, these nutrients are even more important not only to make you feel better but to heal the damage that has already been done by the injury.

The process of an injury usually starts with your twisting or pulling something quite badly, then usually depending on the severity of the injury, your point of injury will bleed internally and the damage still goes on.

This is why ice is applied as soon as possible to injuries so the healing process can begin immediately, and you don’t waste time.

The ice will also bring inflammation down quickly of course, further speeding up the healing journey.

Then when you injury has stabilised, its important to keep bringing in, as I keep saying all the time, fresh natural food when possible to enable food to have its true healing power. People may scoff at this but your cells really appreciate good food coming in all the time because then it can go about fixing the injury, and much quicker than if you went on some kind of junk food diet which will only delay the process!!!

So if you can follow these rules, sleep then becomes paramount. If you get as much uninterrupted sleep as possible, your body will be in full recovery mode and will do its very best to fix itself in record time!

Its also paramount NOT to antagonise the injury again by working through it, you need to work AROUND it and train smart not to upset the incredible healing process your body is now on.

For the record, alcohol is the worst thing you can consume, as your body has to get rid of this foreign substance before it can heal again!

Some injuries are worse than others but these principles will help A LOT every time you have the misfortune of injury!!

I have a lot of questions about blood pressure, and by now, i have helped at least 100 individuals get off blood pressure medication that they seemed to spend a lifetime on. I am not a magician, intead i apply tried and tested ways to change a situation for people that can sometimes seem desperate!

A lot of people ask too what does blood pressure mean? And what ranges should they be in to be considered healthy?

A brief description would be that when doctors take your blood pressure, they are checking how hard the blood pushed against the arteries and veins as it moves around your body.

It is measured in mm of mercury and is always written as two numbers.

The top number, the systolic reading, measures the pressure of the blood when your heart pumps it out and the bottom number, the diastolic number, measures the pressure when your heart relaxes and refills.

Accoring to a million medical journals and accepted to be fact by 100% of the medical community, high blood pressure is diagnosed when readings are persistently above 140/90.

This means you are significantly increasing the risk of having a stroke or heart attack, and can lead to kidney disease, so its always a great idea to have your blood pressure checked at least once a year. You can also buy home machines cheaply in supermarkets these days.

One of the key reasons your blood pressure will be over the top is salt, this is the single most destructive reason why people get high blood pressure and this is why diet is so important. Salt really is the hidden evil in foods. People always go on about fats and sugars, but salt is equally as bad if not more so, and is more or less in every food, especially pre packaged food such as ready meals and all processed food, this literally is a disaster waiting to happen so try and get it out out of your life as soon as possible, and im VERY SERIOUS!!!!!

Other contributory factors are alcohol and a lack of exercise but we will touch on these important points again!!

Diet is so important, fail to pay attention and you’re on a one way track to ill health, change it now if you want to be at your best health levels!!!

The quest to get into shape doesn’t all finish with your workouts. If it does, then i have news for you, you are not reaching anywhere near your potential!!!

If you are on just a diet and not training at all, then you are so far short of your potential its untrue, and you need to get moving right now!!! Your “diet alone” method WILL NOT work medium or long term, it may work for a few weeks but you had buckle down and get training now, or face the frustration of yo yo dieting, which i think most of us have been through  at least one time in our lives, some of you several times unfortunately!!!!

If you are working out regularly, eating healthily and have problems with sleeping, i mean you only get a couple of hours a night, this will throw you off track too! Sleep is the third part of the triangle and to my mind, just as important as eating properly and training hard. When you dont sleep properly, you have no energy to train, you are more than likely irritable all the time and when you’re tired, there is no way you’re going to be in the mood to eat well. Your patience can be destroyed and fast food stops seem to make sense rather than go to all the effort of making fresh nutritious food all the way from scratch!!!!

Lets get this one right and you’re onto a winner, training well, eating well and hitting the sack on time especially in the week, i cannot overstate the importance of this, i really can’t and i know myself that when im hitting all three right, my performances are right out of the top drawer!!!!

If the talk of doing basics bore you, then fair enough, you’re not prepared to buckle down and get serious results. I like that word, buckling down really is the way to go and spells HARD WORK all the way. Make your choice and deep down you know what that must be!!!

29th March

Talking about back problems is a big reminder for most people about some low point in their lives when they weren’t so active, the problems it caused in real life and the actual pain they went through. Nobody wants to be known as the person who can’t join in things that most people consider normal, but that’s the reality of life for some.

Not being able to join in activities with your kids is tough mentally, and most people will do anything to get out of this spiral of despair.

A lot of people go through the stage of heat cream, ice sometimes and massage, often finding out that none of them were really the long term answer to a potentially life altering problem.

We talked about the swiss ball, the big ball you pump up you see around the place sometimes in gyms, houses etc but nobody really knows how to use it properly.

Simply sitting on it for 30 minutes watching a television programme can be big enough of an effort for many, as you learn to stabilise yourself for everyday life situations.

One of the favourites is sitting on your back, with legs over the ball and the ball right up against your bum, then roll you hips to the side. This will not only loosen your hips but loosen your back in a big way, and is often a great warm up to any workout. Try keeping your shoulders on the floor while you do it.

When keeping in the same position on your back, places your bottoms of your feet on the ball, hands by your side on floor and lift your bum off the floor using your feet, this is fantastic for your hamstrings/bum area and will develop serious strength in this area, which will again help your back!

The back, hips and hamstrings are all inter related as I said yesterday and remain very important areas to work, they may not immediately be visual improvements but will allow you to do everything better and with greater freedom, virtually eliminating typical aches and strains, and making you far more powerful and flexible and giving you a lifetime on pain free movement!

When it does fix your back problem, and I have no doubt it will, if from time to time your back stiffens up or gives you pain, then these moves will help you a lot to rectify the problem immediately. This ball is for a lifetime so lets give it a go, there are also many demonstrations online if you google swiss ball demonstrations. Will get videos on here one day!!!

24th March 2011

We talked about cycling in a different way yesterday, lets talk about different ways of running today.

First of all, running on mindless flat roads is one of the most boring things I could think about doing, some people enjoy it but I like to make things a little more interesting and a lot more productive in terms of results!

Since we live in a pretty hilly country, there’s never a hill that far way fortunately, and sometimes vicious hills!!!

Hills will always get you working harder, going uphill works your legs better, makes your lung capacity push on to new levels, helps bring your body fat down quicker, gives you a greater sense of pride and achievement having completed them, gives you some great views when you get to the top and in general provide some great workouts!!!

This is why I head straight to them every time!!!

Another thing you have to look at. On sunny days, you will see plenty of people walking or running on flat roads. You won’t see many if any people running or walking hard up hills, those you do see working hard up hills will nearly always be in good shape.

If you want to look at where people in great shape train, go to the more obscure parts of the area, these people are never on show and never want an audience. They want a place where is quite but offers great challenges in terms of terrain. You feel great when you walk hard or run up a very steep hill or even mountain, there’s nothing like that feeling when you develop your potential from only being able to walk 10-20 minutes on the flat to being able to run up a mountain, it may sound far fetched to some of you but it is totally achievable, I can guarantee that!!!

So today, tomorrow or the weekend, by all means warm up on the flat roads or track, but head for the hills and experience a brand new set of results that will astound you in all sorts of ways!!
