21st March

A fresh week full of optimism and the chance to attract good things into your life.

If you get an absolute blaster of a monday in, you know as i’ve said many times before, you have a much greater chance of having a very good week. Nothing feels better than working out hard at the start of the week, and chances are you will not really feel like it at all to start with, especially maybe after a heavier weekend than planned. We have all been through it but today is the day to get your head down to work hard and set strong foundations down for the future.

This is the mantra a lot of business people i come into contact with daily, they now say that getting your head down and working harder than ever is the only way to get through this recession. If you do this, then the overall result of your efforts is likely to be a lot better even than you had hoped for. This is certainly my strategy and to embark on this you need a structure in your life that will set you up to be successful!!! Its like doing a job every day, week in week out, every week of the year for years, there are certain things you have to do or everything is going to fall apart.

Like we always talk about, you shouldnt have weeks when everything is unbalanced. You need to be doing your resistance work/weights EVERY week along with your cardio work (running, walking, biking, swimming for example) EVERY week, this is the balance you need for all types of reasons. This is what you need to be successfull full stop and the big question is how much are you going to apply yourself to it. If the answer is a lot, then you will be successful beyond your wildest dreams, im talking about applying yourself to do at least 4-5 times a week in training terms, and to your eating 5-6 times a week, concentrating on putting some good nutritious food into your body nearly all the time, still having time for the occasional treats, but treats should never form the foundation of your diet.

Do these things right now and this week, and then every week and things will fly for you!!

Positivity is a massive mindset change for some, and a lifesaver for those who practice it daily.

Even under the most extreme conditions when its hard to think positive, its power cannot be understated. Thinking positive only doesn’t work though, you have to act positive to really make things happen in a big way.

The people in japan are under extreme pressure, and thinking positive is not exactly the first thing on their minds, but we are already starting to hear heroic stories about people who are doing extraordinary things through their actions and rescuing people. For example, you have 50 men trying to stabilise the troubled nuclear reactor from complete meltdown, as I write this, it is being reported that are having some success in what is being described as a suicide mission, this is incredible and an amazing story and hopefully the positivity will continue that will help everyone out.

On a seemingly far more trivial not, the consumer confidence index released by the nationwide building society today says that the index is down to record lows of 38, it was 48 last month, also a record low last month, to give you an indication of normal pre-recession levels, its usually around 100.

So thinking positive amongst all of this gloom and doom is tough, but the alternative is far worst. If you are negative about everything, then hate, frustration, anger and bitterness tend to be normal emotions for you and will send you into a negative spiral that is nearly impossible to get out and can be very self-destructive.

If you try to be positive about everything, then better emotions tend to fill your life. Hope, satisfaction, good spirits, optimism and the ability to give things a go tend to be everyday emotions in your life and can inspire you to take a chance when perhaps in the past you wouldn’t.

So you have a straight choice and for me there’s only one choice and that’s positive. Unfortunately, every single day you will bump into people who are always negative so don’t expect to have much company in your positive thoughts!!

This is why its hard for everyone to be successful in their training, eating and sleeping, it takes constant positivity, even in very tough economic times when people are losing jobs all around you.

Theres never been a more important time to be, act and stay positive if you’re out for your best quality of life!!!

The ability to get out there on such a beautiful day and exercise should never be taken for granted.

Most people will tell you that if you have spent any time at all in hospital, then being out in the fresh air and actually being able to exercise is a very powerful statement indeed.

Most people will also tell you that if you have spent any time in a cemetery, it will definitely make you realise how important your opportunity to exercise and live life in the fresh air actually is.

Most people if not all, would swap with you every time if they had the chance, and that’s a fact!!!

To brighten the conversation up a bit, isn’t it time you got much more active than you may be currently, perhaps you are but if you’re not, then you really need to start putting things into perspective and creating as short and long term plan for your health.

The short term plan could involve making a massive difference to yourself in the next 12 weeks or so, it is entirely possible to make such a short term difference to yourself if you’re willing to change your everyday habits for a better existence.

If you have a fried breakfast, snack on chocolate and crisps, fry everything and eat a lot of processed food, and then wash it all down a few times a week with some wine and/or a few beers, then its highly likely you’re going to be on a one way road to ill health and problems down the road sooner rather than later, its all a matter of time.

If you changed that to some porridge for breakfast, snacking on fruit and natural nuts, drink plenty of water throughout the day, and keep making lean proteins such as chicken, turkey, fish etc the foundation of your week , then avoid alcohol 6 days a week only drinking in moderation a maximum of once a week, then you’re going to transforming your life in a bigger and better way than you ever though possible. High energy levels, a lean harder body and very positive levels of general health will become the norm in your life.

Time to do it and what are you waiting for!

Another nice week of weather to get you into it, and make your summer promises you made to yourself happen.

Fat burning workouts need to keep happening, and forget staying on stepper’s in the gym for 2 hours to enable you to make that happen. It may say “fat burning” on the machine but it really doesn’t mean thats going to happen at all.

The myth that you need to do cardio to burn fat and use weights to build needs to exploded and kicked into touch for good. That way of thinking in unacceptable and will lead to mediocre results, even after a lot of time spent in the gym. Using resistance/weights in your programme is essential, vital, hugely important, whatever important term you want to use, you can use it so i can’t over estimate it!!!!

Everyone who wants to get into a programme always thinks bike, treadmill and stepper, and sometimes rower, and then settle on whatever they feel most comfortable on, and that usually means what they put the least amount of work into. Its common to walk into some gyms and see the same old people hogging the same old machines, nothing different ever gets tried!!! A sweat may be achieved but doing something different may be a swear word for some!!!

You know by now im a big advocate of working in a circuit style, and i don’t mean drop the weight so low that the workout becomes some kind of pathetic pandsy type of workout that you never get out of breath, this type of cop out is really no acceptable.

You need to work with weights that cause you discomfort especially when it comes to the  7th or 8th rep, so you are actually working hard, and not going through the motions, which is the worst way to train and guarantee mediocrity of the highest order!!!!

You need a good circuit in your life, think 6-8 exercises done for 3 sets and 8 reps per exercise, follow this and you’re going to be getting the results you really dreamed of!!

example-press ups or bench presses

arm dips using bench or chair

alternate squat thrusts

lateral raises

lat pulldowns

curls with dumbbells

plank-aim for one minute eventually

See how you get on and WORK HARD!!!

Making a big difference to your physique involves changing your programme every 6 weeks and certainly 12 weeks.

The same can happen with your food. Just because you change your food around, it doesn’t have to mean you change your diet from one faddy diet to another either, it just means exploring different foods, different recipes and a willingness to test your taste buds in different ways.

For example, I was talking to somebody yesterday who was on a very well known diet some of you have mentioned before.

She said that she wasn’t allowed two weetabix and milk on one particular day, as well she wasn’t allowed beans on wholemeal toast another day, what RUBBISH!!!!!!!! This is madness of the highest order and please don’t tell me that you have paid for all of this rubbish?

The lady in question quickly went back to her tried and tested way of eating of if its healthy, then its going to be good for you. You cannot go wrong this way.

You also cannot go wrong if you have followed this healthy way of eating all week, and if you want to sample an occasional treat the weekend, then there’s no problem at all? You have worked hard and well at your food all week and you deserve a treat here and there, as long as its not a whole gateau for example!!!

There was another good sign yesterday, a 12 year old I have been training with some weight to lose and was addicted to sugary/fatty foods has now made great strides with his eating and training, and is looking now like a much healthier version of himself, and hes much happier for it too.

The test yesterday came with his pancakes, for the first time yesterday he had NO SUGAR on his pancakes, because he didn’t feel the need to. Another positive was that he said the pancakes didn’t taste half as good as they used to, because his taste buds have changed and sugar is not a major part of his life anymore!!!

I had some pancakes too, made with wholemeal and stonegrain flour, 2 eggs, nearly a pint of milk and they were delicious. NO SUGAR, NO BUTTER AND NO SALT. If you think that is horrible, perhaps you are still addicted to sugar and not getting the results you want?

Time to change!
