Jan 2nd 2011

The  extended holiday means you won’t be back in work until at least tuesday, which means you have had more than enough time for exercise, if you haven’t then perhaps you may need to re-examine your time management or lack of!!

Anyone who has had a severe thrashing on the beer should be sick of it by now too. You should really be looking at giving your liver a break and flushing it out after all the abuse you have given it over the festive period.

What about the chocaholic’s? Have you said “lets finish the box off/boxes off, may as well they’ll only go in the bin”! If you have finished off, then do it now and give your body the break it finally needs after the attack of huge amounts of sugar christmas time. Christmas is associated with sugar nearly as much as it is with santa claus in some houses. It is the “must have” christmas toy every year and there’s always room at the inn for chocolate is a lot of people’s houses. Getting from this situation is mindset change and it can be done. How long depends on a lot of things and your commitment levels in particular, so make it 2011 the year that it all finally changes!!

Monday tomorrow is a bank holiday, but an excellent chance to freshen your life up in all ways so lets give it a new start!!

Thursday 30th december 2010

If you had taken my advice yesterday, you would have made some kind of commitment to getting in shape again. If you had taken some action, you may be feeling stiff today due to your lack of activity over Christmas and the approach to the holiday period.

What also causes the stiffness is the often poor choice of food and drink over this time. The old saying goes that if you put rubbish fuel into your body, don’t expect it to drive well. If you keep on putting sub-standard food and drink into your body, it will splutter along and jump like someone driving a car for the first time.

If im honest, I am stiff myself today and really tired after starting back good sessions on Monday. Its important for me to get through this period so im back feeling great by next week. Some people will be off until 4th January but that is far too long for me. I WANT to be back in work this week so I can get back to feeling good full stop, im glad I made the decision to start back this week honestly.

Along with feeling good comes lower body fat, a harder and leaner body, much better energy levels and the inner drive that everyone has returning in a big way.

If I stayed off until 4th January, I would be lethargic, irritable, not wanting to do anything etc. The idea of going out for junk food every day and going shopping most days frankly makes me want to puke!! Most people it seems love to shop but I really think that there better things to do. There are only so many shops you can go through, after all these shopping parks are the same as any town or city, no individual shops around anymore unfortunately!

I would much rather be out in fresh air walking, running whatever, it just feels better and if you have been stuck in the house all over Christmas due to the snow and ice, NOW really is the time to get out there and feel much better about yourself. There is absolutely no excuse not be exercising right now, please don’t fall for the groundhog day faddy excuses for diets in the new year, PLEASE don’t do it, save your money and promise yourself that you won’t be fooled anymore with their false promises and sometimes damaging effect on your long term health! According to latest research, 97% of them DO NOT WORK over the long term!!

Let’s get out there and make a start!!!

Thursday, 23rd December

Exercising is the best way to keep your brain sharp well into old age according to a study released today in the daily telegraph. We sort of secretly knew that but its always nice to have it confirmed by the doctor’s and researchers finally.

Your brain’s ability to function properly can decline up to 40% if your lifestyle is not that great. For instance, if you smoke and drink a lot, your chances of declining sooner are much increased. Your choice all the way and after all, we live in a democratic society and it’s a free country!

Your brain is your most important thing when you think about it pardon the pun. Being aware of what’s going on around you keeps you in control and allows you to make decisions independently every day. Most of us take this for granted but probably most of us again know people who cannot think independently any more unfortunately.

One of the most important decisions your body will make is the decision to move/exercise. Moving around is vital if you want to stay healthy. If you don’t stay healthy, your brain will become less and less of a factor so they both feed off each other. Exercising is often considered a choice for most people, but when you really analyse its importance, it should really be considered vital!!!

So we have been talking all week about not wanting to put weight on over Christmas, the thought of not being able to function at 100% is pretty scary I’m sure.

This is another reason to do some workouts over Christmas, losing weight is not always the number one reason to train, the ability to live a normal healthy and active life should never be underestimated!

Tuesday 21st December

One common goal for christmas that is very attainable is not to put weight on over the festive period and not to get that horrible bloated feeling that makes us feel at an all time low straight after christmas, lets not fall for that rubbish and get yourself going right now and be prepared for anything!!!

One way to put weight on is to drink to excess, eat to excess and not do ANY training, that will work every time! Thats a very popular strategy over chrismas apparently!!!

The realistic version is to accept the fact that your eating wont be as tight as normal, you may be drinking a bit more than normal and your motivation won’t be perhaps as up there as it normally is. Getting through some workouts is highly important, and the minimum im talking about this week and next week is 3 meaningful workouts. Im not talking about the walk on the beach with the christmas jumper either, that should be an addition. The same applies to a round of golf, a walk in the park and a long walk around the shops, they don’t really count as a “meaningul workout”!!! I’m talking about “get stuck in” workouts when theres no messing around so lets get out of this rut right now!!!

Big things happen to your mind and body when you make 3 workouts a week count. You will definitely feel better, which is a must during this week and next, then you want your body to feel tighter and harder, which may be a welcome change from past christmases!! You want to create a big bounce going into january to get rid of the oncoming doom and gloom. With rising VAT and job losses, you want to be fired up to have a successful 2011 and you’re going to be at a big disadvantange if you don’t have bucketloads of energy to create big momentum in the very first month of the year!!!!

This is not “big talk” either. Those with the best energy levels are always more ambitious, and therefore likely to create more opportunities. Life can offer a lot or life can be a bitch sometimes according to some, give yourself a big fighting chance by getting your workouts in, eating some decent food still and not destroying yourself by drinking every day, great to have a drink but when it becomes the “12 drinking days in a row over christmas”, then it becomes destructive!!

Four days to go so let’s get two more meaningful workouts in please!!

Wednesday, 15th December

We always talk about avoiding treats and high sugar, high fat foods on here. Christmas is a time when its unrealistic NOT to have something you fancy.

A guy I train yesterday allowed himself sausage, beans and chips for first time in 5 months. He said it was absolutely beautiful and enjoyed it a lot! He knows it wasn’t an every day occurrence or even every week occurrence, so there’s absolutely no problem with that of course, it may actually help his body a bit, and make him yearn for healthier foods for the rest of the week.

It’s the same with people I have who consumed quite a bit of alcohol at the weekend. They said the first couple of drinks were fantastic and they felt great. Then they found their capacity had decreased so much, by the fifth drink they were struggling. Also, the worst part was the hangover the next day!! They had forgotten what a hangover feels like and this had put them off drinking for a while again!

Chocolates are a big part of Christmas for many people. Unless a significant part of the weekly budge is spent on Christmas chocolates for some people, there is a panic to rival the student marches in London!

When you have usually gone without chocolates for a long time though, you will find it impossible to get through that huge amount the next year. Also, if you DO manage to do it, you will usually felt rotten afterwards and regret the indigestion and weight gain to follow!

We are all the same Christmas time, some bigger eaters than others and trick is how many and in what quantity you eat the chocolates, beer/wine, junk in general. Eat a lot and you put weight on and your desire to exercises gets less and less. Eat in moderation and everything’s fun and no damage done!

Your choice.
