Thursday 2nd june

The temperatures are up and most people complain about their workouts, their intensity levels not being able to be reached and they go totally off any kind of running efforts.

If you have read this for a while, you know I never recommend long, long boring running efforts anyway, which are the last thing you probably want to do in this heat (24 degrees and upwards).

I have concentrated on mostly cycling today because it is a much cooler activity, because you have a good breeze usually, and especially when you are close to the sea of course.

The benefits are huge and the main attractive benefit you have of cycling in weather like this is the scenery, especially on days like these which are supposed to last at least until Monday.

There are a million ways to get fit so before you get too many excuses out, think long  and hard before you cancel your training efforts for the weakest of reasons!!!

In fact, the training sessions you DON’T feel like are ALWAYS the most valuable. This applies to hot and freezing cold weather.

If you want to end up like most of the population, then stay on the settee and eat whatever you want, no matter how much harm it does you over the long term.

The chances are that if you are reading this, you DON’T want to end up like most of the population! You DO want to be fit and healthy and you should be willing to employ every strategy under the sun to make it happen.

For instance, if you think its too hot to train the weekend, get up early and hit the bike before 7am on Saturday morning, believe me there is no better feeling!!!

If you think im crazy suggesting that, perhaps you have to raise your commitment levels and attitude.

The reason I suggest 7am is because it’s the coolest time of day in predicted very warm temperatures, plus you have the rest of the day to do all the other things you wanted to do.

There is a way around everything and anything, and all you have to do is open up your mind to it. Lets cut out any narrow  mindedness and lets get your training in to make big things happen in your health and life in general!!!

31st May 2011

Make the grade with your workouts and eating this week and you’re going to be off to the biggest flier ever after a bank holiday weekend!!!

The monday workouts i talk about being the most important transfer to today. This now becomes a very important tuesday and one which will set the tone for early june and make a huge statement of intent for you!!! You need to be fired up right now to achieve the best results possible going into flaming june, or so its called anyway!!!

I know personally today that i have already had a few very good runs, and i feel ten times better for getting out there in the fresh air. The fresh air can have a very powerful effect on everything, not only wellbeing and feeling good, but will encourage excellent sleep of course. Sleep is always one of the most important factors in getting into great shape!!!

How many of you have spent all day outdoors and NOT had a great night’s sleep? Thought not!

Fresh air is the best sleeping aid i know, its always best not to go down the sleeping tablet route if possible and rely instead on the natural alternatives. The good thing about staying outside is that it encourages fat loss because you’re going to be moving around a lot more too. Have you noticed how you never sit still when you’re outside? You will sit still all day long watching the television at home, but outside you’re going to be far more active and burning calories without even thinking  about it!!!

If you can’t spend anytime outside in this weather, then you’re seriously missing out!! Its great to do workouts at home or at the gym of course, but there is ALWAYS a place for the great outdoors, and if you live in the area there will be multiple opportunities to sample the beautiful scenery!!

A great day for swansea city getting in the premiership yesterday of course, and this will encourage many more visitors of course into the area, brendan rogers the manager said yesterday that wales doent end when you get to cardiff and that swansea and surrounding areas such as the gower was among the most beautiful areas in the world, and that spreads all the way down to llanelli, and burry port/pembrey too, where the millennium coastal path is renowned for its stunning beauty.

Take your opportunities for a great start to the week, and use the great outdoors to help you in that quest!!!

Thursday May 19th

How’s all your training targets going?

For example, if you are used to using the coastal path and your target has always been the outer reaches of the country park when cycling, then why aren’t you doing it now?!!!

If you are, what time are you clocking in for that trip? Do you test yourself say once a month to see how fast you can do it? I find this very beneficial when training people to enable me to check how they are doing, it also gives the individual concerned satisfaction in knowing that they are constantly improving.

If you never check yourself, then it’s a recipe for mediocrity in your training and your overall results full stop.

If you are a complete beginner, your initial aims need to be just to show up to your training sessions and showing an optimistic and positive attitude. When you’re actually doing something about your health and fitness, nobody can fault you for your attitude, and this is where it all begins.

We were all beginners sometime or another and its exactly the right time to remember that again, and why we got into exercising and eating properly in the first place.

None of us get it completely right either, none of us are perfect and we are there not to judge others. From my own perspective, my role is to help others, give individuals the benefit of my experience and to save people time getting into shape, and getting them there safely and without injury or strains of any kind, that’s always been the most important thing for me.

So basic things you can do to check yourself are get a measuring tape to check your waist and hip measurements, they are the key readings I ALWAYS look for!

It would be a good idea to buy a blood pressure machine too, they are cheap enough these days and will give you an accurate measure of your very important blood pressure AND resting pulse rate.

Back to your waist measurement, a simple way to check your health is take your height, say you were 5 foot which is 60 inches, and your waist should be a maximum of half that amount, if it isn’t then it needs to come down for all sorts of health reasons!

So if you are 5 foot tall, and 60 inches, your waist should be 35 inches or less.

If its not, then keep reading this and I will help you all the way or email me on fitness@kerimckibbin.co.uk

Monday, 16th May

The benefits of being on a roll can never be understated.

Lets start off with what happens when nothing’s going your way, you’re putting weight on and you’re not feeling good about yourself. How long does this period last? Weeks, months, or even years? Is this really acceptable to live your life like this? Is your life a misery when you’re overweight, not fit and don’t feel even 5% of what you were before at your best, you do not feel attractive any more, you have no energy any more and your aspirations and dreams are firmly stuck in the sand!!!

The good news is that it DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY!!! And don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, i will repeat, don’t listen to all of those people who rip you off, don’t listen to all those “cowboys”, yes COWBOYS, thats what i call them anyway, you may call them charlatans!!!

Im talking about those companies who pray on your insecurities!!! They are the companies who want you to pay £75 a week to drink shakes all week instead of eat food, sure you may lose lots to start with, but can you really drink shakes instead of eat food all your life? I thought not, and just way for the big weight gain after it all finishes!!! Charlatans every one of them!!

You shouldnt have to put up with green and red days either, points or other cowboys who are out to fleece you out of all of your money, DON’T PUT UP WITH IT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They make me want to puke at times, its that maddening!!!

Anyway, promise yourself today that you will approach your health and fitness with a very big positive attitude!!! You WILL eat well 80% of the time, you WILL EXERCISE at least 3-4 times a week, and you will not quit every time things don’t go your way!!! Life is not perfect so you had better be prepared to last the course this time, and im here to help!!!

Jean and debs have already commited to achieving big things with their body and mind again, its time cyril got onboard too, you have my number cyril i believe or if not, email me on fitness@kerimckibbin.co.uk

No time to waste everyone, lets do it!!!!

13th May 2011

As we hit friday 13th may, you may be wondering why your programme may not be going as well as it should.

There are lots of reasons maybe, but the main one must surely be just getting the thing done in the first place!!!

You will get a high from exercise and eating well, that is without doubt.

You will get a low from not exercising, because you are not injecting any energy into your life. In fact, a recent study from spain suggests that people who eat the most trans fats are 50% more likely to suffer from depression, than those who eat the most momo and polyunsaturated fats.

To put that in a easy way, if you eat ready meals, processed foods and those foods who have lots of chemicals in them, they are likely to be loaded with trans fats. Fast foods and takeaways for example constantly come out the highest when it comes to trans fats and therefore put you at a much higher risk of heart disease and other life threatening diseases, if eaten on a constant basis.

So whats your choice going to be this weekend? Is it going to be a friday, saturday and sunday of processed rubbish washed down with alcohol? And then be somehow puzzled by the fact that you have put weight on by monday?!!!!

Or are you going to spoil yourself in a different way?

Sometimes its a great treat to go to m & s and get a whole chicken which tends to be very good quality, then get some tomatoes there which can make you love tomatoes again, and some spinach and do a nice quick meal out of these high class ingredients. You can get a rich tasting meal out  of this right there.

The SAME meal can taste very bland out of many other supermarkets, so it does show paying extra can sometimes make a big difference!!!

I am not recommending you shop at marks and spencer all the time of course, that would be silly but once a week take the chance to purchase some really good quality and great tasting fruit and vegetables, as well as some great tasting healthy food across the range.

You may not want to do it of course, but its got to be better than 3 days of gorging yourself on rubbish thats going to keep you on the toilet all weekend, for all the wrong reasons!!!!
