An interesting part in the paper yesterday about people who had made their names into brands.

Two of the most familiar to you are worth mentioning.

Richard branson and James Dyson of the vacuum cleaner fame of course.

Both of them said they had failed so many times before they eventually became super successful, often having moments of doubt and indecision, always doubting whether they would and indeed, could carry on after a trail of failure.

The best bit of advice they said would be to keep trying if you believe what you are doing is right, and you really want to get there.

This is so important to consider when you think of your eating and exercise programme.

How many times have you thought about giving up? Or more like actually GIVEN up on your programme, only to be brought back into it when you suddenly had the heart to give it one big effort again.

This is the trick, the hardest thing to do like branson and dyson said. To pick yourself up and really drive yourself on in the face of all kinds of adversity.

So you should consider it no big deal to fail-a number of times!

For example, if a baseball player scores just 3 times out of 10 in his innings, he is considered a hall of famer!!!

If you this example, then surely you should be concentrating on your SUCCESSES and not your failures, because failures HAPPEN full stop, and you had better get used to them because they will always be around.

The great news is though that your successes will always far outweigh them! They will be more fun, change your life more and they will be a lot more pleasant! Just keep trying and you know they will keep on happening!!

Monday, 25th February

We always like to talk about hitting it hard on monday, and setting the right tone for the rest of the week, but you should also have made it easier on yourself by not going crazy on junk food and alcohol for the entire weekend!

One night when you have a drink within reason is no problem, and one day when you have bit of what you fancy in terms of your favourite foods is no problem either. The problems start though is when you make it an ALL weekender, meaning that you “go for it” on friday, saturday and sunday.

When you do this, no matter how hard you hit it on monday, you’re going to be playing catch up for the rest of the week!!

So there is a couple of rules you have to follow if you want to make the weekend work FOR you, instead of working against you.

Make the alcohol one day a week only, make the foods you consider a treat one day a week only, or if its two make them relatively small portions, or certainly much smaller than you would normally do.

When you do have that day when you relax on food and alcohol, the very next morning you exercise first thing NO MATTER WHAT before breakfast!! This tends to burn fat straight away and THIS HABIT will get you back on track saving the effort you put in all week before the weekend.

The weekend is definitely there to have fun, but if you binge ALL weekend, then no monday superhuman effort is going to make up for it.

So let’s say your big day/big night out is saturday, then that could be your rest day too. So the sunday morning becomes your big early morning workout, a true “recovery” workout if there ever was one!

Then by the time monday comes along, you will have already got the rubbish out of your system, and monday’s workout will have a much greater value for you, and TRULY set you on the right path for the rest of the week!!

Friday, 8th February

A funny thing happens when you start exercising.

For example, if you went for a bike ride, a run, a weights session or just a tough hilly walk, then a funny thing happens just as you end your exercise session.

You should know by now that you feel better straight away after exercise. You have a feeling of wellbeing like never before, and this is one of the reasons why you exercise in the first place.

The funny thing that happens is when you eat or drink after exercise.

You may well feel like a big plate of fish and chips afterwards, or alcoholic drink afterwards. Have you actually tried doing this in practice?

Most people i speak to feel like absolute rubbish afterwards, due to the stodge, fat and chemicals in those products i just mentioned.

So you have just done something REALLY GOOD for you in the exercise session, and your body will soon notice that the chips or alcohol, or both rally do not agree with it! Your body is really craving GOOD food, in order to repair itself from all of your hard work!!!

You must realise by now that all of that hot and sweaty work done in your workout deserves good food afterwards, or a lot of that hard work WILL be wasted. Most of us want a good reward for our efforts so try listening to your body, don’t fight your natural instincts and really look after your body interally.

The time for having any alcohol is usually once a week and usually the weekend.

The time for having the fish and chips is a one off and again, most people choose to do it as a treat at the weekend.

This is not a piece about telling you what to do, its about allowing you to make the best choices to complement your workouts, and enable you ultimately to get your best results!!!

Friday, 21st December

It looks as if the world didn’t in fact end today, although there are still a few hours to go!

It hasn’t been the end of the world for most people i train this year if they have made a lot of mistakes in their diet and exercising either!

Through explaining to everyone i train that they don’t have to totally blow their diet if they go off the rails now and again, this has resulted in my largest number of people training right up to the last friday before christmas. Not only that but we have record numbers scheduled to train christmas eve, the gym in burry port will see a surprising number on christmas day and especially boxing day!

The message really seemed to have worked better than ever before this year, and i would like to thank everyone for continuing to show so much dedication right up until the end of the year. The encouraging fact is that these are the people who would normally throw the towel in during early december.

So after persuading everyone to train all the way up to christmas or more or less, its heartening now to already have people tell me already how much better they are feeling in themselves, how much money they are saving by not buying all of the junk food that they normally do, how much they are saving by not buying sometimes vast quantities of alcohol etc etc, and how great its going to be NOT to wear the baggy jumpers at this time of year, because most are keen to show their new found bodies!!

I am hearing better sleeping experiences, and a wide variety of people are reporting one of their best measurements THIS WEEK!! We all try not to put on much in december, but to actually lose quite a lot of body fat and shave off 3 inches off your waist is sensational. Again, i have to say that this a big benefit of being measured regularly!

Thanks again for the huge effort, and let’s see what happens next week!!!!!!!

Thursday, 22nd November

The famous christmas “let’s settle for no improvements, let’s just hold what we have” is alive and well this year again, perhaps even more so. This is your most dangerous mindset to avoid if you possibly can because its bound to end up in you putting ON weight, in my experience.

“Settling” for mediocrity shuts off something in the brain that usually makes you strive for success.

Once your mind isn’t in the right gear, then your workouts will soon become “go through the motions” events that will give us little in terms of benefits.

The next stage after settling for medicore returns is giving up your programme for december, another disasterous decision.

The next stage after that means “i will start back after christmas”! Many people actually do this!! Then they find out that they should never have stopped training in the first place because training after christmas after a break is EXTREMELY TOUGH!!!

When things are tough, the prospects of following through on a programme diminish dramatically, as not everyone has got the right in them to see it through!

This is why most people who start a programme after christmas tend to quit by Valentine’s day at the latest!! Please do not end up as one of those sad statistics!!

This is why i come back to saying that you need to aim to improve from RIGHT NOW again and maybe for the first time, december can really become one of your BEST month’s, instead of becoming one when you end up piling on the weight, you end up becoming breathless just climbing a flight of stairs, and your friends and family start asking you that dreaded question “have you put weight on?!!!”.

I have seen all of these stages work out different ways, but taking my advice and actually acting on it will mean a great deal for your overall christmas happiness and success starting off in 2013!!!!
