Judging your progress just on the weighing scale can be very destructive in terms of how it destroys self-confidence.

Everyone knows now we regularly have individuals who lose 2, 3, 4 even 5 inches off the waist in a month.

Most people would be and should be thrilled with that progress, because you usually look and feel heck of a lot better too.

The ones that aren’t have been conditioned to think of the scale as the ONLY measure of success. This is simply untrue but the media has told us that weight off the scale is the one thing we should worry about!

The medical profession will tell you that 1-2 pounds a week is the recommended weight loss, and this is the sustainable way to do it and keep it off.

When you hear of people losing 5 or more pounds in a week, this is usually due to drastic cuts in calorie intakes (usually faddy diets/shake and bar diets), and this may carry on for a couple of weeks until it eventually reaches a screeching halt.

When the individual gets frustrated and starts eating properly again, the weight piles back on quicker than ever before and usually leads to that person ending up at their all-time heaviest weight, and this can lead to low self-esteem and confidence.

What would you rather look and feel like? Clothes feeling really loose, changing sizes at regular intervals (perhaps down to sizes you haven’t been since you were in your early twenties), everyone complimenting you on how great you look, you start feeling full of energy and your workouts step up to your best ever levels,

OR

Just losing weight on the scales, feeling hungry all the time and even when you lose weight, you still have saggy skin left?

Then inevitably put the weight back on and 5% more-numerous In depth research of the diet industry says this is true.

Forget about the scales, your clothes and how you feel will always be a better guide. Your waist and hip measurements will be vital.

We test body fat professionally too, so this test will always confirm your progress.

Be realistic, and always look to lose weight and body fat sensibly.

Determining your best workout should be thought of in terms of what does it cost your body in energy terms. This is the real way that great things are going to happen for your body.

A lot of men tend to measure their workouts on how good it makes them look, or think it makes them look. For many men for example, they tend to make Friday night “chest and arms” night because the chance are that they are going out later and want to look their “best pumped up”!

We like to think that we have changed that thinking completely.

Many women think that as long as they hit the treadmill and spend endless hours on the bike, that the fat will be “stripped away” and they will get their “beach body” far quicker this way.

Weights many females think are for the “bulky look” and they really don’t need them, in fact many females never hit the weight room. It should be obvious by now that we train with huge variety, and mixing strength training up with everything else is the way to go.

Many of our women are stronger than many men in certain tests, and all of those women are getting leaner, would certainly never be classed as “bulky” and are reaching new standards of fitness on a weekly basis.

Energy cost of workouts are a good way to think about your efforts, and will have a direction relation to lowering your body fat, getting you leaner and sending your fitness levels through the roof!

The tyres, the prowler, sledgehammer work with little rest in between, has a lot more energy cost than doing curls and leg extensions with very light weights for example.

It may be nice doing a couple of light weights exercises, and chatting on the bike for half hour at low intensity, but your time in the gym should be as productive as possible. Your weight sessions should be high on energy cost too, just like the ones I keep showing all of you all the time, and all of you are doing very well on them.

Use your gym time wisely, and you will always deliver far more impressive results.

Some words that belong in the 70’s and 80’s but still prevail today are the words “toning”, “shaping” and “lengthening” your muscles to get a “sleek” look with your body.

Your muscles have a genetically pre-determined shape, so these adverts you see trying to sell you some kind of “lengthen your muscles in a sleek way in a ridiculously short period of time” and make your muscles “long and lean just like a dancers” are guilty not only of false advertising, they are SCIENTIFICALLY WRONG!

Each of you will end up with a different shape, the best shape your body can be, your muscles will look better if you use strength training, and your body fat will reduce considerably if you eat a lot better too. This is what gives you “a great look” and will make you look “sleek”.

Getting into a healthy range of body fat will make sure you look your best.

A lot of times I have measured several women in the same excellent range of body fat, but each of them have had a different shape but all looked great and they felt amazing.

By the way, they do look lean, they are NEVER bulky and look athletic and very feminine always.

The propaganda you often get from people promising longer, leaner muscles for your body don’t understand your body at all, and have definitely never studied it. How many times have you heard that pilates and yoga will give you that long, slender look and using WEIGHTS will just make you bulky?

This statement is one of the greatest LIES you will hear about exercise, this statement is always from people who don’t know a thing about exercise science, who have never trained a lot of people and shouldn’t comment on matters they have no real experience on. Pilates and yoga WILL be good for your body, but please don’t try to lie to me that weights are going to make you bulky and be a negative in some way!!!!

If you train your muscle, saying it’s going to become long and lean is like saying all of our workouts are going to make you several inches taller, absolutely impossible, your muscles cannot respond that way.

Men and women are guilty of trying to look like someone they never will. Getting a grip of reality is vital when you start an exercise programme, and choosing the best way to accomplish your goals always involves not only strength training, but our speed and agility work, balance and coordination work too.

This is really the way to look incredible, to perform at your best in training AND daily life, and feel fantastic on the inside and outside! Your muscles and shape are unique to you and you only, so celebrate the way your body looks.

We put so much emphasis on balance training because every single person needs it in their lives and I mean every day.

You need proper balance to even walk and run properly, you need it to perform every physical task, from carrying shopping , making food, doing the washing, taking part in sports, just about everything.

Most of you carry things one side, your school bag, groceries out of the supermarket, lifting in your job or at home, playing golf is ALL one sided for example (that’s why I see so many hip and back problems at the gym), even in cooking you are often bending and moving from side to side reaching for different things, the facts are we live an unbalanced life in terms of most of our physical movements if you really think about your daily life.

Some of you know you have poor balance, some of you will be unlucky enough to find it out unfortunately when you may have a fall of some kind or feel really unsteady and this can cause all sorts of problems.

It’s a simple fact that everyone is being far less active than they used to be, and balance and development of balance is going to be a big casualty.

One lesson of PE every week is not going to help kids get the amount of balance they need. How the government got away with getting rid of the double lesson PE is a national disgrace?!!

What happens when the child leaves school? Studies show that there are far less people playing team sports than ever before.

Adults slip easily in a lifestyle of inactivity because of the pull of computers, tablets and media. It’s easier to get anything done online these days, and it takes effort to exercise so its not much of a choice for some people.

So balance you will all know by now is something we concentrate an awful lot on, right from the start and all the way through our programme. We want you to move fundamentally better and pain free for the rest of your life. Assessing your balance on a regular basis should be an absolute priority for you.

When roger bannister first broke the four minute mile, it was an achievement of stunning proportions, and literally stunned the world.

Most people don’t know that a lot of other world class runners emulated that feat during THAT year, and the explanation most commonly thought of was that once they knew it was possible then the fear factor of running quicker than four minutes quickly went, and other athletes believed in themselves that much more, KNOWING it was very possible now.

With our training , anyone seeing a tractor tyre being flipped for the first time is pretty intimidating, whilst looking “cool” at the same time!

When you first see it, you never think you can do it, but as you get stronger, and get taught the right technique, then it becomes entirely possible!

When you see people time and time in front of you doing it, and they encourage you to challenge yourself to do it, the possibility becomes very real.

Flipping such a large tyre is definitely not a beginner’s exercise, you need to develop real strength first, and all over strength at that. This is why a complete programme is absolutely vital, and your core is very strong before even attempting it.

Getting stronger is a process that ANYONE can do. You need to plan your programme properly, strengthen your weaker areas and putting it all together so you become much stronger in all areas, ready to take on ANY challenges.

You need to exercise with purpose, have a plan and continuously bring up your weaker areas. This way of training will always make you very successful in anything you do!
