Friday, 29th June

The end of the week already and hopefully, you have have found it one of your most productive ones!

This summer so far has resulted in the lowest number of running sessions i have ever had-purely because of the weather!

This has made me much more inventive though, and by developing more and more programmes indoors to create fresh excitement and enthusiasm!

Anytime you create new programmes, you had better make sure that the new exercises had better work!!

There is a million gadgets and faddy exercise products on the market, and i have hopefully managed to navigate these choppy waters and come out the other side with some solid programmes that are guaranteed to bring some good results.

When measuring a good programme, i have to consider two very important factors.

The first will always be safety, if a programme doesn’t have caution at its heart, and the emphasis of proper form as its cornerstone, then the programme will fall flat on its face, because either injury to the exerciser or a lack of results will be certain to be the outcome!

The next vital element is intensity and “energy value” to the individual who is training.

If you have a scale of 1-10, 1 is sitting down and 10 is going absolutely flat out, then i tend to encourage people to work at least to a 7 or 8, and sometimes even a 9. This is a sensible and productive way to manage exercise programmes, where results are important but safety and long term development are always key considerations for me.

So you shouldn’t be put off by this weather one bit, you should open yourself up to new programmes, new ideas, and new ways of doing things full stop.

Time moves on and so does the way we exercise!

Monday, February 26th

To maximise your gains in fitness, i cannot stress enough how vital your eating is, and what eating CLEAN really means.
To me, eating clean means eating food as much as possible in its natural state, and keeping refined sugars to an absolute minimum.

All the foods we always talk about will always bear fruit for you if you pardon the pun!

Porridge is a natural food that gives you long term energy, and stops you snacking.

Any oat based products or porridge with added “apple pie” type flavourings, WILL NOT DO YOU ANY GOOD.

Wholemeal bread in moderation is a sign of good clean eating, White bread is the equivalent of a disaster zone, full of refined sugar, bleaching agents and lots of chemicals and rubbish designed to put weight on you, it will be really unhealthy on all sorts of level for your body, and you have to avoid this rubbish if you are to be successful in weight/fat loss.

The margarine and butter on top should be avoided, this is saturated fat and can never be any good. Saying that, butter is the natural product and helps your body more than margarine, which can be horrid for your body and contains needless calories.

White meats are very welcome, fish is fantastic (no batter or any fatty sauce on it), cottage cheese is great, lean cuts of red meat are fine once a week.

White pasta is not acceptable when you can eat “clean” and have wholegrain and wholewheat pasta.

New potatoes and sweet potatoes are great examples of potatoes with a nice low sugar release, and offer a lot of nutrition.

White potatoes wont work as well, more refined sugar.

Fruit is fine in moderation, although classed as refined sugar, is a food in its natural state and offers far more than any negatives.

Fruit juice should be dilluted, and this will will give you far less refined sugar per glass.

All vegetables are classed as eating clean, and offer an abundance of nutrients and is nature’s way of making you healthy and helping your body to function properly.

Eating clean means trying to be as natural as possible in your food choices, this will automatically cut down on your refined sugars, and give you dramatic changes in bringing your body fat down!!

Thursday, 29th December

If you got into your workouts gently yesterday, then today is a day to step up the ante.

You have to face reality that your first “proper” workout will hurt a little bit, and it will be a little uncomfortable, due to the high likelihood of your eating too much and drinking too much maybe. Throw in some lack of sleep and you have the perfect combination for inferior workouts!

The great thing about getting through a good workout today is that you are bound to feel better from it. It may be painful to get through at times, but after you have managed to get your blood flow going, the aches and pains will slowly go and you will leave the scene of your workout in much higher spirits than when you first started!

Another neglected part of Christmas for most people is the lack of water consumed.

Water is the most important part of feeling and looking food. Without it and its not going to happen for you full stop. Your internal workings and your vital organs wont function properly if you don’t hydrate yourself adequately every day. Water is vital to human life, so lets make every effort to get something that is so fundamental to your health 100% right now.

I was guilty of it myself over Christmas, drinking too much tea and coffee, and in a matter of days, realising your energy levels have gone so far south, you don’t have the inclination to exercise, and even if you have, your performance is unlikely to be anywhere near your normal levels.

I guarantee that if you get a good workout in today, and you sip water throughout the day and especially in your workout, you will feel 100% better and as close to your normal self as is humanly possible.

After all, the sooner you feel better, the sooner you are going to perform better and eat well too. A lot of people I know don’t feel they have the incentive to eat well unless they have trained.

It all starts with today’s workout, don’t follow the crowd and wait until the new year, hit it today and lets get the feeling good process moving right now!!!

Monday, 5th December

So if you have already lost the battle of good eating in the run up to christmas, all is not lost!!

High calorie food can be addictive, as well as nights of heavy alcohol for some. This is exactly the time to do something about it then!!

One great way to bust all of this wide open is to get stuck into interval training.

In recent studies, students who completed 7 workouts over a 2 week period had amazing results through high-intensity interval workouts.

They upped aerobic capacity by 13%, fat burning capacity by 36%,  and boosted key aerobic enzymes by 25%!!!

The programme consisted of 10×4 minute high intensity cycling blasts, they went at 90% of capacity with 2 minutes rest in between each set. This is a lung buster of the highest order as many of you could imagine!!!

Long term studies confirm that high intensity cardiovascular workouts increase fat burning DRAMATICALLY compared to low intensity traditional work on bikes and treadmills.

Most people still perform the low intensity stuff because thats all they have ever known.

With the higher intensity workouts, you tend to use mainly carbs in the workout for fuel, but the rest of the day you set your body up for using fat as a fuel, which is ultra-important when it comes to the most important thing, getting rid of the fat!

So high intensity interval workouts ARE harder work, but they are SHORTER in duration and you can use a ton more variety in your workouts! I talk all the time about doing interval workouts with weight training and trying to attain more of a non-stop tempo.

This is the stuff that really gets you fit and healthy AND quickly!!!

The easiest way to start interval training is to walk one minute on treadmill, then run much faster than normal for a minute, then walk a minute, then run faster again for a minute and so on. You may find that ten minutes of this type of interval work is more than enough!!!

Its all about quality rather than quantity so give it a shot!!!

Thursday, 23rd November

Hopefully, you have reinvigorated yourself this week by re-booting your exercise programme and you have already hit a big couple of workouts already this week.

Its this type of enthusiasm that i have been bumping in to all week long. Any “feeling sorry for yourself” attitude has been crushed and replaced with fresh enthusiasm full of people rallying themselves for a big end of year performance.

All this sea change in attitude takes is a momentum shift in the way you approach everything. If you approach everything in a negative way, you are highly likely to get a negative reponse.

If you approach everything in a highly optimistic and positive way, then doors usually open for you and people can be very receptive to your ideas.

For example, if i suggest a workout to someone that involves one of their most difficult bike rides so far this year, with a few extremely difficult hills etc, then the initial response may not be so good! However, if i point out that this type of ride coincided with them being in their best physical performance all year, then they start to associate the two and then start nodding in a positive way and are then far more likely to approach and have heck of a go at this hugely difficult ride.

Then when the ride is completed, a huge sense of achievement and satisfaction starts to come over them and this one workout alone, can make the difference from either having a mediocre end to the year, or a far more exciting end to the year with perhaps new highs of performance attained, which usually transform to excellent body fat levels and that all important feeling of wellbeing!!!

Whatever your situation right now, positivity about your true ability and previous achievements this year need to be revisited right now to end the year on a massive high, and allow you to follow on into 2012 with a fresh batch of goals that will inspire you on to greater things again!!
