The famous christmas “let’s settle for no improvements, let’s just hold what we have” is alive and well this year again, perhaps even more so. This is your most dangerous mindset to avoid if you possibly can because its bound to end up in you putting ON weight, in my experience.

“Settling” for mediocrity shuts off something in the brain that usually makes you strive for success.

Once your mind isn’t in the right gear, then your workouts will soon become “go through the motions” events that will give us little in terms of benefits.

The next stage after settling for medicore returns is giving up your programme for december, another disasterous decision.

The next stage after that means “i will start back after christmas”! Many people actually do this!! Then they find out that they should never have stopped training in the first place because training after christmas after a break is EXTREMELY TOUGH!!!

When things are tough, the prospects of following through on a programme diminish dramatically, as not everyone has got the right in them to see it through!

This is why most people who start a programme after christmas tend to quit by Valentine’s day at the latest!! Please do not end up as one of those sad statistics!!

This is why i come back to saying that you need to aim to improve from RIGHT NOW again and maybe for the first time, december can really become one of your BEST month’s, instead of becoming one when you end up piling on the weight, you end up becoming breathless just climbing a flight of stairs, and your friends and family start asking you that dreaded question “have you put weight on?!!!”.

I have seen all of these stages work out different ways, but taking my advice and actually acting on it will mean a great deal for your overall christmas happiness and success starting off in 2013!!!!

Thursday, 13th September

We talk all the time on here about constantly changing your workouts to bring you fresh results, and many of you have judging by some of the transformations you have been through.

We also talk about not letting yourself down in times of stress and doing the usual that most people do of “emotional” eating. In plain English, that means eating and drinking badly when stress comes into your life.

I have seen occasional drinkers become every night drinkers simply by having a month of stress, and finding that a bottle or two of wine has suddenly become the “best” solution somehow.

This is when we need re-evaluate what we are doing, to rediscover why we got into exercising and eating well in the first place.

Everyone should do this because its easy getting “caught up” into all the busy areas of our lives (work, relationships, family etc), often so much so that we never change our exercise programmes, never seek help on what we may be doing wrong, and this is when we can totally lose direction and suddenly we put on weight, lose our fitness through missed workouts, and our ambition vanishes without trace!!

This is because again we forget why we are doing this whole thing. Missing workouts we never once missed is a sign. Allowing a lot more fast food and processed food into our shopping trolleys is another sign we are “giving up” on ourselves!

This can be solved to a degree by the measurements being taken regularly, every 4 weeks, and discussing why your measurements has gone up or down.

None of us are perfect and this is why we need to assess often exactly what we are doing, or our dreams of outstanding health and have a strong fit lean body can go up in smoke without us even noticing!!!

Usain Bolt says once you come out of the blocks in a 100 metres race, and out of the drive phase, then the last 40-50 metres is quite relaxing for him, and there’s nothing he can do to make himself run quicker.

If you see quotes from most world-class athletes, they try and stay away from any great strain in their efforts and rely on great technique and even relaxing at times throughout their races/competition.

This can apply to your training too of course.

Have you noticed when you start to run, it seems so much of a strain, that you may never get to the stage when you will be able to run without straining yourself.

Then with a bit of walking, a bit of running, bit of walking, then some more running, you end up getting to the stage when you can actually run all of the time. This is extremely difficult to do and its the practice you need to get in to eventually alleviate all of this discomfort and strain.

Anyone who runs now, or who has had to go through this process will testify that all of this is true.

Then the next stage to go through can be quite a pleasant one.

When your fitness gets up considerably, you eventually get to RELAX in your running stride, and this enables you to run for much longer distances.

For many of you who can run good distances,  you will experience the ability to get some serious “thinking time” in your running. This means that you can relive your day through your run or think about a business opportunity or think about your family or anything you want, as the actual process of running is not that difficult anymore, it has become more of a regular thing in your life, and the ability to relax is absolute key for you!

These are all different processes along the way of being in your best possible shape!!

How you do you know if you have had a great workout or on the right kind of diet?

Well, you should just know if you are doing the right kind of workout FOR YOU! Same goes with the food side.

The sad truth is that there are many, many people trying to scam you out of your money with various ways of getting into shape.

Some of the biggest liars and scam merchants are the weight loss clubs, when will they learn that they need to stop helping people lose weight the wrong way.

Losing weight quickly (5 pounds a week on occasions) and in a totally UNSUSTAINABLE WAY, is not the right way to do things, I hope people will wake up to these charlatans!

97% of these people will pile all this weight back AND, get this FIVE PER CENT MORE on average when they come off this crazy way of eating.

Avoid them at all costs.

Then there is the charlatans of shakes and bars, you know the ones I am talking about, charging you a fortune to drink shakes and bars all day, then one meal in the evening.

Then you come off the diet soon enough, and then REALLY pile the weight on in double-quick time. The people peddling these crazy ways of eating ought to be locked up, and I really believe this due to the misery they cause on individuals desperate to finally get their excess weight off.

With these people I would throw in the people who advise you to exercise on a plate, and charge you a costly sum for doing this. They are backed by ZERO scientific evidence and the people who still fall for this marketing rubbish and downright lies really ought to know better by now surely!!!

Theres a million other exercise programmes out there, most of them trying to get your hard-earned money out of you seemingly all the time.

Its time to fight back and not let them con you anymore. I would name and shame them but for legal reasons I cannot, but I suspect many of you have been conned by them already.

The good news is that most of them DON’T stay in business for very long anyway. Longevity comes from doing the right thing all the time, or at least most of the time and this is why tried and tested ways back up by science will always work for you 100% of the time!!!

Put your trust in results, and ignore the con men of the health and fitness industry!!

The positive feeling you get from exercising is an old cliché but one thing is for sure, it can never be underestimated.

If you’re just relying on the weather to get you feeling good about your life, then I wouldn’t hold out too much hope!

Exercise is something you can literally do any day of the year and it will make you feel better.

A walk up steep hills may seem intimidating to start with, but when you are able to do it and ACTUALLY do it, there is never a better feeling of wellbeing. This is both from the buzz you get from the walk AND the deep feeling of satisfaction you get from reaching such a good level of fitness. Again this example is something you can achieve ANY DAY OF THE YEAR!!

The same goes with eating well and healthy, if you have done this for any appreciable length of time, then you will know about having a lot more energy already, and I won’t have to tell you about that.

Eating well also gives you that inner feeling of wellbeing that you are doing your best for yourself internally. If you eat well then you are likely to be avoiding serious disease, your skin is going to glow and all your vital organs are going to really appreciate the good care you are giving them!

For all of this positive evidence, a lot of people still ignore this and find ways to avoid the fundamental ways of staying healthy.

I have heard virtually all the classic excuses and the way people rationalise their unhealthy lifestyles is often hilarious, and sometimes deeply saddening and even disturbing.

I started this piece off talking about “positive” feelings, and unfortunately, an unhealthy lifestyle will bring you nothing but negativity.

Food and lack of exercise will offer you the exact opposite of the positives I gave you earlier on. Most people don’t realise the chemical reaction that food and exercise gives the body, and its consequences.

The bottom line is eat and move to stay positive, eat poorly and lead a sedentary lifestyle and prepare for negative consequences over time.
