The subject of funding for the right things in our community will never go away, but the worse thing we can do is sit back and take it laying down!

Norman Schwarzkopf, the leader of the US/allied forces invasion in the gulf in 1992 was known for his strong belief and leadership qualities. In retirement, he started doing some leadership course to fortune 500 companies.

When asked how to be a great leader, and what was the very most important factor in great leadership, he says the biggest and most important thing you HAD TO DO was say the truth! Now most successful companies instill these teachings throughout their management structures, and the best ones survive.

Those with deceitful and opaque management structures usually end up bankrupt eventually.

We have at the gym a strong philosophy. The only gym in the county to actually enforce the anti-steroid/recreational laws that most gyms ignore.

We train with the latest science of training, pushing things to the limits but still in a safe environment. Our substantial childrens/junior membership appreciate that and the results and fun it creates.

We speak the truth and there’s no way we are going to let this generation get even more unfit, more overweight and more miserable about their future prospects.

We are not going to let the authorities get away with promoting ill health through excess consumption of alcohol and rich food establishments that are slowly killing our population and community. Of course, we support that view that there is a place for pubs in the community and eateries, but what we do not want is taxpayers money going into these above those who provide physical activity for the community.

Did you know the rugby club have to pay ever-increasing fees just to play rugby, fees have doubled and are now going to triple within the next month, all since the new government came in and slashed budgets!

Time to stand up for this generation, and question your local authority on the statement given to me last week!

Again, I quote “we are giving money to those who will take the community forward”! Pubs and takeaways don’t qualify for that in my book!!

How short-sighted!

The good news is that I have a meeting with the authority this week, this time very senior managers who seem far more positive and experienced, and I sincerely hope that they take the community’s health and fitness as seriously as most of us do in burry port.

The truth, honesty and the vision to create a much more active version of burry port is needed by us and the authorities. This week will be pivotal in getting on the right road!

The big story today is about just 4 kids in 10 aged 7 years getting enough exercise.

This is a terrible statistic and one which will have dire consequences for those upcoming generation expecting the already overloaded NHS to cope with the upcoming problems with obesity, blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis etc etc.

The government response is to cut more money from the sports and leisure budget, charge kids a lot more to use playing fields, and the news is that the leisure centres in wales are unsustainable losing on average £500, 000 each year!

I will give you an example of government priorities on health.

The council said months ago that there was money to improve your premises.

We put in for it as a gym that had a huge junior membership.

We found out this week that they gave a lot of the money to a local pub, encouraging people to drink more alcohol and eat more fatty food. Now that sounds like a GREAT investment!!! Pubs are closing in alarming numbers so a great future investment there too!!

We were told that they would give the money to people who are taking the town forward.

Great idea again! Let’s make people even more overweight and let’s strain the NHS even more!!!

Apparently, our gym which helps an enormous amount of kids and people of all ages out, was NOT the way forward!!!!!

Nice to see your hard-earned tax is going to support an ever-increasing obesity problem, and they wonder why our population is getting more and more unhealthy!!!

Great sessions don’t happen by accident.

What I would give a seasoned athlete would be very inappropriate for even a very fit person in general terms. The seasoned athlete reached that wonderful level through hard work, a very good diet, lots of regular sleep , and a fierce will to succeed at a very high level. There would have been no letting up of that effort.

The very fit person in normal gym standards would have also put a very good effort in most of the time, would be capable of impressive feats and would have a good diet.

The difference between them and a seasoned athlete who competes regularly would be the intensity of how hard they approach things.

The seasoned athlete would hardly have a break from their diet, weigh their foods constantly, hardly ever drink alcohol and be religious about their sleeping patterns.

The very fit person compared to normal gym standards would eat well most of the time but have occasional treats, like a drink at the weekend sometimes overdoing it, and sleep well in the week but often go without it the weekend due to over-indulging.

These patterns by both individuals dictate what type of session I would give them, how often and how much intensity would be involved in each session.

The very fit gym person could maybe hang with the seasoned athlete for a one off session, but the difference would be that the true athlete would put up with those sessions EVERY session, have great recovery powers through their lifestyle habits and experience, and this is the KEY DIFFERENCE.

The biggest surprise that individuals have when they come home from holidays is their first measurement immediately after returning home.

Depending on what type of holiday they have had, the measurements across the range can vary wildly!

Someone who has drunk alcohol every night on their trip and eaten heavily will be the worst offenders and their first measurement usually shocks them!

Blood pressure is usually way up!

Their resting heart rate is usually way up!

They usually put 2-3 inches on their waist and hips.

They usually add 2-4% body fat which is a significant number!

Their energy levels have vanished and show no signs of returning.

Their motivation is at an all-time low.

Their start back to exercising again is usually delayed by a series of minor excuses.

So you can a two week holiday of this kind of indulgence can have a serious effect on one’s ability to get back to where you were before the holiday!

It’s up to you what kind of holiday you want but beware the consequences of constantly overdoing it EVERY night on holiday. The best advice is to get straight away into it, take your time the first week back especially, and within 2-3 weeks, you will soon be feeling yourself once again!!

This shows the benefits of measurements too! If you weren’t constantly checked, you wouldn’t know the damage caused internally, as well as how you look in the mirror of course compared to when you went away!
