Sometimes, you can improve your limits by accident, and set a new standard. I went on my normal sunday morning run a 7am this morning up to Graig lookout hill.

After a couple of games of football in the back garden today, my oldest boy wanted to come for a run with me as he needed to burn off some excess energy in my view.

This was a longer one, up the hill by Rock house, up the mountain and you come out by the lookout again, this time the pembrey end, which is equally as hard if not harder, and very scenic.

I hasten to add he beat me relatively easy!

Then the other two children wanted to do it! So we went off on it again and by the third run of he day, i felt tired. The kids didn’t though and shows what children are generally capable of when you give them opportunities.

This helped with two things. I still get that sunday night “anxiey” because it’s still the night before the start of the week, and nerves are normal for most of us.

Also, it proved that i was indeed capable of MORE every sunday, i was congratulating myself over and over about doing the lookout hill, when in fact a run of double the distance was more like he mark i SHOULD be hitting.

We ALL need to reset our goals from time to time, realise we can achieve more, and we need to work our bodies harder as our capabilities are often way greater than we often give ourselves credit for.

Everyone i have ever met loves the feeling exercise gives them WHILST they are doing it and in the swing of it.

If you stop abruptly for one reason or another, you stop moving so much and your energy decreases over time. Then it is difficult to remember how good you actually felt when you got fit, how good your joints felt, how the lack of pain had a huge positive impact on your life.

Most people would treat their piano better than their bodies. They would get someone in to tune the piano regularly, and make sure it was still playing a true tune.

The problem with not training and “tuning” our own bodies is that the more we avoid it, the more out of tune our bodies go. So does our mind and our expectations of what we can do, and what we used do. When we forget how good we can be, then that is dangerous as we tend to tread water and every day we feel like we are walking in quicksand.

There is nothing worse than someone reminiscing of what they “once” used to do or were capable of. Life doesn’t end in your 30’s, 40’s or 50’s, you should have discovered by now that great things are possible if you stay “in the swing” of training, and make it to the gym 3 times a week.

Don’t put off what you are really capable of, live “in the now”, talk of “things to come in your life” and stop looking back fondly, your best years ARE ahead, but only you can set yourself free to enjoy them, and it all starts with moving more.

ALL of you have good character, and one of the ways character is built is focusing on your LONG term goals, and where possible, avoiding many of the short term pleasures that will trip us up.

I’m not talking about having a drink once a week, it’s great to enjoy yourself. I am not talking about occasional treats, we are all human and we need to enjoy ourselves.

Short term pleasures or the easy way out include having a week off for no reason, which turns into a month off and your motivation disappearing.

Eating rubbish all week because you had a bad monday, and you say “i may as well eat badly all week now”.

Ask yourself what character you are made of, one which shows up for your sessions EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T REALLY WANT TO, or are you the one who thinks one more night off won’t matter.

That’s your character right there and is decisive in determining how quickly your longer goals become reality IF AT ALL.
Your choice, free country, but i’m trying to help you reach where i know you DEEPLY CARE ABOUT.

Prioritising what’s important to you is vital in all areas of your life.

If you don’t realise what’s most important, then your time and effort will be wasted on what’s “buzzing through head”, the MANY distractions and what doesn’t really matter.

Prioritising your health comes out on top because it allows you to have focus and have enough energy for everything else going on.

Family comes first and they are going to need a whole lot of energy out of you, and EVERY DAY too, so your fitness better be good so you can offer more all the time.

You must be fit and healthy to offer consistent every day performances that will take you to to the next level. If you feel slow and lethargic every day, then you can’t expect great things to happen for you.
