Monday, 9th September

Monday’s blog is as important to me as it is to everyone else. I always go on about the importance of starting Monday with a bang, and its vital for me to get that spirit going for myself too.

My Monday morning starts at 420am when I get up for breakfast and prepare for my first session. I know that if I show up for that first session a bit tired, a bit sleepy and in general “not up for it” then I know I am not serving that individual who is paying me to train them.

So my preparation has to be good and methodical and it all starts with an early night on Sunday and a good breakfast of porridge, water and one coffee to get me going.

Once I get into my first session, I know I am set up for the day and revved up to perform at my best.

I know once I get my first run of the day under my belt, I feel so much more energized and the energy and adrenalin soon starts to flow at a rate of knots!

This is why I tell people all the time, and the ones that are new to exercise especially, that you actually CREATE energy and future energy by exercising and eating well. It may seem that you are burning energy up by exercising, but once your body recovers, you will feel so much better after you have had a bath or shower.

It’s the constant regularity of your exercise programme that will literally make you feel better by the week. This is the addictive feeling that people enjoy so much from exercise, and this is why practically every single person I have spoken to feels so much better from exercise, and never wants to let that emotional uplift disappear!

So here we are at another Monday, so please try and make it happen today not only to get into shape and set the week up nicely, but to create an abundance of energy for yourself every day this week!

Tuesday, 27th August

The great news is that many of you have been tearing it up completely in the month of august.

August can traditionally be a quieter month, but the end of august I am seeing the fruits of the labours of many members coming through very well indeed!

Here’s just a list and a small group of examples that we are all proud of.

One person has lost now over 14 inches off her waist, 4 of them just in august would you believe! I hasten to add this was a monumental effort and she has put a 6 day a week plan in for this month for the first time and thrived on it. She has been super strict eating clean throughout and no cheating!

Five people have fitted into clothes for regular sized people for the first time in two years, one has fitted into clothes for regular sized people for the first time in FOUR years!

One person is running her first marathon in October, and has already ran 16 miles in one go. It must be added she couldn’t run for more than ten minutes 12 months ago!

All the football and rugby players I train are already reported much improved endurance, accuracy under pressure, much quicker speed, agility and awareness, and strength across the board is dramatically up! This has been proven in game situations already, this is the true test so well done!

95% of our monthly measurements have been good with average waist inch loss of 1.5 to two inches in 4 weeks.

This is an exciting time for me with so many different goals that people have, and I am doing my very best to help get them there!

Sunday, 25th August

The subject of funding for the right things in our community will never go away, but the worse thing we can do is sit back and take it laying down!

Norman Schwarzkopf, the leader of the US/allied forces invasion in the gulf in 1992 was known for his strong belief and leadership qualities. In retirement, he started doing some leadership course to fortune 500 companies.

When asked how to be a great leader, and what was the very most important factor in great leadership, he says the biggest and most important thing you HAD TO DO was say the truth! Now most successful companies instill these teachings throughout their management structures, and the best ones survive.

Those with deceitful and opaque management structures usually end up bankrupt eventually.

We have at the gym a strong philosophy. The only gym in the county to actually enforce the anti-steroid/recreational laws that most gyms ignore.

We train with the latest science of training, pushing things to the limits but still in a safe environment. Our substantial childrens/junior membership appreciate that and the results and fun it creates.

We speak the truth and there’s no way we are going to let this generation get even more unfit, more overweight and more miserable about their future prospects.

We are not going to let the authorities get away with promoting ill health through excess consumption of alcohol and rich food establishments that are slowly killing our population and community. Of course, we support that view that there is a place for pubs in the community and eateries, but what we do not want is taxpayers money going into these above those who provide physical activity for the community.

Did you know the rugby club have to pay ever-increasing fees just to play rugby, fees have doubled and are now going to triple within the next month, all since the new government came in and slashed budgets!

Time to stand up for this generation, and question your local authority on the statement given to me last week!

Again, I quote “we are giving money to those who will take the community forward”! Pubs and takeaways don’t qualify for that in my book!!

How short-sighted!

The good news is that I have a meeting with the authority this week, this time very senior managers who seem far more positive and experienced, and I sincerely hope that they take the community’s health and fitness as seriously as most of us do in burry port.

The truth, honesty and the vision to create a much more active version of burry port is needed by us and the authorities. This week will be pivotal in getting on the right road!

Tuesday, 20th August

The biggest surprise that individuals have when they come home from holidays is their first measurement immediately after returning home.

Depending on what type of holiday they have had, the measurements across the range can vary wildly!

Someone who has drunk alcohol every night on their trip and eaten heavily will be the worst offenders and their first measurement usually shocks them!

Blood pressure is usually way up!

Their resting heart rate is usually way up!

They usually put 2-3 inches on their waist and hips.

They usually add 2-4% body fat which is a significant number!

Their energy levels have vanished and show no signs of returning.

Their motivation is at an all-time low.

Their start back to exercising again is usually delayed by a series of minor excuses.

So you can a two week holiday of this kind of indulgence can have a serious effect on one’s ability to get back to where you were before the holiday!

It’s up to you what kind of holiday you want but beware the consequences of constantly overdoing it EVERY night on holiday. The best advice is to get straight away into it, take your time the first week back especially, and within 2-3 weeks, you will soon be feeling yourself once again!!

This shows the benefits of measurements too! If you weren’t constantly checked, you wouldn’t know the damage caused internally, as well as how you look in the mirror of course compared to when you went away!

Tuesday, 13th August

You are taught to eat your greens as a young kid and most of you probably hated that advice!

Then you get a little older and you start to appreciate the advice.

Taking advice is never easy, and it is good to second guess advice, because not all of it will be good.

Sorting out the good advice from the bad advice is not always easy, but if you rely on science to do it for you, then you cannot go wrong.

You know that eating plenty of greens in your weekly diet, and remembering to put them in your weekly shopping trolley is important. There are numerous independent studies to back this up, and their value to your body in all sorts of different ways.

Science tells us that weight training is vital for increasing strength, increasing muscle tone, increasing our metabolic rate, and increasing bone density, amongst many other benefits. You need to practice it at least twice a week.

Science also tells us that getting your heart rate going is excellent for us, in terms of benefits to our hearts and lungs, as well as improving our circulation in our bodies.

These are simple examples of getting it right, and using solid evidence to help us decide what we should be doing. Despite this evidence, many people fail to implement this advice every single week which will bring undoubted benefits.

This is why faddy diets fool many people every day promising a quick fix WITHOUT any science behind it.

Doing things the scientific way may be a little harder to do, but at least you know its going to work!!!
