Instilling confidence and self-esteem is one of the most important things we do.

We have countless individuals who come in with zero confidence levels, very low self-esteem, some or a lot of anxiety about joining or walking through the door, and a sense of this may be their last hope of getting into shape.

Confidence comes from overcoming challenges and realising the progress you are making each time. Going through the motions in your training is something we highly discourage, the need to feel your body changing is very important but we also teach the importance of realising it will take time, and foundations need to be put in place first.

Chances are that when you start exercise maybe for the first time in a long time, you may have a troublesome knee, a bad back, you may have blood pressure issues, you may be recovering from serious health issues of any kind, whatever the problems are it’s important that they are recognised and a plan is set in place for you to improve, and as safely and quickly as possible.

So we assume that there is no such thing as “average”, every single person has their own story, things that have gone wrong in the past that stopped them having a successful health and fitness journey, and plenty of positive things that they want to rediscover again and create a better future.

Getting to know someone’s story is vital. Some people need a quiet word and a pat on the back, some people like to shouted at occasionally and be constantly driven on, but every single person needs to be ENCOURAGED no matter what. Constant encouragement makes the difference between a little bit of progress, and constant everyday progress that you can sustain.

Zero confidence levels are transformed through someone achieving their goals and having their progress constantly monitored and assessed. If they are shown to have improved a lot, confidence will soar.

Low self-esteem will be transformed through the self-belief developed through overcoming challenges. The realisation that you can “finally do it” will be so empowering for you, this will automatically lead to you seeking out new challenges and you having the new-found confidence to take on just about anything.

We realise that a lot of members will come in with anxiety issues, many gyms are perceived to be intimidating. It’s vital that all our members know every one else and everyone is treated 100% the same with no favouritsm. Realising that everyone is exactly the same as you (when they start) with their own fears, insecurities and worries is important because you then know everyone is on the same level playing field.

Teaching fitness the right way is highly important to us every day, but making sure self-confidence and self-esteem are improved remarkably is perhaps the best legacy we can achieve..

Moving forward every day is tough, but is the overall key to us being successful or not.

Having a day off training is fine, chances are you will come back stronger the next day. Having a week off now and then can work such as holidays etc and you can come back refreshed.

Taking time off from training in general though hurts your progress big time. Studies show that for every week you have off, it can take you up to two weeks to get back to where you were. This is tough when you work hard only to see you go back at a rate of knots, especially when you have put so much work in.

Everyone i have trained over the years has gone through fazes of “not feeling it” and often wanting to miss a week of training when they do. This is perfectly natural and as humans, we are not robots and our emotions control how we feel on particular days. Some days we feel low on energy and emotions, some days we feel on top from and it’s as if we can take on the world.

This is why having a structure and a programme works so well. We “get through” the bad days through our workouts, instantly helping with the stress and emotional lows. If we keep on working through it, we are likely to come out through the other side in much better shape (mentally and physically), then if we gave in and accepted the emotional lows we were going through would become permanent.

Critical decisions like this make the difference on whether we get back up, even when we have been knocked down pretty hard in the first place. Every 3 week programme we have is a big challenge to get through. Then it gets binned, and a new one starts. This keeps jolting your body often. When you shake things up so much so often, this constantly keep you on the edge physically and mentally, wondering what’s coming next.

All of this keeps you moving forward, feeling better and not accepting sliding back for a moment. Exercise and eating right is of paramount importance for the good AND bad times, it keeps you positive, keeps you upright and still fighting whatever comes your way and that’s not emphasised enough!!

Wednesday, 13th April

Here’s a little experiment for you.

Try doing something that involves movement right now. Go for a walk, come down the gym, go for a run, bike ride or anything that makes you move and getting breathing quite heavy and out of puff.

Then think of at least one thing that you have been putting off. Maybe its a decision on something, a phone call you have been putting off, perhaps its something you need to sort out at work but have thought “maybe next week”, perhaps its making a decision that you’re not going to put up with something anymore and you’re not going to hang around with that person who is negative with you all the time, whatever it may be just think of that on your walk/run/bike ride etc.

Then decide WHATEVER happens, when you return you’re going to take action on that very subject that you have been agonising over, or its been bothering you so for long it’s not even funny anymore. Within 5 minutes of getting in the house, you are going to DO IT NO MATTER WHAT.

Once you do it, you will be so relieved and proud that you had the courage not only to do it, but get negativity out of your life. This will set you free for all the GOOD things in life that NEED your attention.

Have you noticed i mentioned MOVEMENT at the start? This is the key, moving more will automatically get you in the frame of mind to make big changes and immediate changes that will immediately change your life for the better.

Then, once you get in the habit of making big decisions one day, then you will start knowing the formula to create further big changes, perhaps a few big changes all on the same day if you practice it enough. It’s all about creating your right state of mind, it’s all practice and definitely not a case of being born with it or some kind of magic powers that only some have. You have it totally within your power right now! All it takes is a bit of bringing it out of you.

Exercise not only leads to you looking and feeling better, but leads to a much more positive mindset that propels you into making important decisions that will literally change your life.

Friday, 8th April part 2

This is one of most questions i get asked pretty much all the time by many members we train. It illustrates the need to hang around with positive and helpful people and keep them in your life. Also, to get rid of hurtful, negative and those who try to destroy you emotionally OUTSIDE of the gym.

How many of you perhaps have grown up with friends through school, sport, work, college just about anything. You were good friends for years and then at some stage, things start to change.

This has happened to me and i know it’s happened to many of you too or i wouldn’t get to hear of it personally happening to many of you.

When you join the gym, we try to make it the most positive environment by only taking on good quality positive people.

As long as you show up 3 times a week and eat right, then you are guaranteed to excel, often do amazing things in your time with us, and always look and feel a huge amount better than when you first started.

Whilst most people will congratulate you, praise you and admire your hard work and dedication, unfortunately you will a tiny minority who will not like it. This takes different forms. It usually starts off with a small jibe, a slightly nasty comment and dig or sustained negative behaviour against you.

I have heard even some of our most successful members have face to face aggressive comments to them by “so called” friends, often upsetting them deeply. This is downright bullying and i am begging you ditch those so called friends into touch-for good! We try to constantly encourage at the gym but beware those outside it who don’t share your goals and aspirations and don’t support you.

The old saying is that you are most influenced by the 5 friends or work colleagues and family you spend the most time with. IF you spend your time with negative and hurtful people, then your mental and emotional state is likely to be very fragile, and you will be answering too them, and you will never ever reach your potential if you listen to these people, so stop hanging around with them full stop!

Imagine those 5 people being new friends and them being supportive, positive about you, encouraging, looking after your wellbeing, and looking out for you all the time.

Your life would TRANSFORM OVERNIGHT and your potential would go absolutely crazy in a good way!! Nothing would be impossible, nothing would stop you and you would have so much more fun doing it.

You wouldn’t have to worry about ANYONE telling you that you couldn’t do it, you shouldn’t be doing it or to stop doing it even.

Time to act right now and take all those crushing your confidence, crushing your dreams and aspirations, and crushing your future OUT of your life. If you dont then this pattern will always continue and some will continue to make your life a misery, when you should be celebrating your massive success right now and answering to NOBODY’S criticism!!!

Friday, 8th April

Here’s what’s just hit me right now (hits me every day!) and it should hit you right now too! It needs to be said and now!

Each and every one are different, you approach training differently even in the same programme. You all excel in different things, some are stronger, some have more endurance and some have blinding speed that is difficult to re-create. Not one of you is the same.

This is the most important thing you can consider tonight-CELEBRATE how different you are!

Nobody is going to be the same as you, nobody can do this like you, nobody can inspire others like you, nobody can do as good a job at this as you-this is fact, you are all different on your ability but as long as you approach your programme and everything you do in life with passion and commitment, then good things, often GREAT things can and will happen!

The mission you should be on now is not only continuing to be different, but continuing to be performing well above average all the time, set your family or friends a great example, if you work for someone get them to appreciate you more by showing them your true potential and how inspiring you can be.

Don’t listen to anyone who wants you to “fit in” and not create your own work and efforts. People who create their very own different and impressive work won’t always please everyone, but be proud of what you are doing right now, you are making a massive difference ot yourself and others.

Mindset, the way you look at the world is everything and will always make the difference between you being one of the crowd or you reaching your true potential and standing out in every way possible.
