A lot of people get carried away with working just arms in the exercise sessions. People think that if they just work arms in one session, then that’s going to give them incredible arms.

Most people don’t realise that you work biceps and triceps in most things you do anyway.

The purpose and reason for your biceps in movements terms is to bend your elbows while you help your upper back muscles in any kind of pulling motion.

Anyone who has done weights will know that you can pull from overhead, if you are in a climbing motion, or if it is in front of you, as in kind of a rowing motion.

The reason for your triceps is to straighten your elbow whilst helping your chest and shoulder muscles in a pushing motion.

You can push overhead, such as putting something like a box on a shelf, or you can push out from your chest such as pushing a car which needs jumpstarting again.

If you think about what your muscles are really for, you will be far more likely to benefit from motions and exercises that are going to really benefit you in everyday life.

Its not often that you do a bicep curl in everyday life, or a tricep pushdown come to think of it?

This is not to say that these exercises are useless, in fact they are very beneficial.

Just realise that in most exercises, you work a number of exercises in one go, and this is why whole body workouts in one workout are very demanding, but will get a whole lot more done for you as regards increasing strength and burning body fat, and giving you everyday strength you can use in real life.

A lot of the new stuff in the gym helps you become far more functional ready for all of life’s movements that you do regularly, and the ones that surprise you.

Jason has asked me a good question on whether it was best to train in the evening or the morning. There are good pros and cons for both, but whatever you decide, its crucial you do what suits you, and exercise the time which you can actually do the most in a week!

Pro’s for working out first thing in the morning are;

1. you get it out the way early, meaning nothing is likely to disrupt your training such as something coming up later in the day.

2. you burn fat straight away training before breakfast, as you wont have any food in your system.

3. training early sets you up for the day! You will feel energized all day long and not feel more tired as some people would imagine.

4. the gym is quiet very early in the morning, you will not have to wait for equipment and you have plenty of room to move around.

5. it’s a good change, mixing around your training times can stimulate your body into fresh gains, and take you totally out of your comfort zone!

Negatives would be;

1. With no food in your system, your performances are likely to be not quite as good.

2. It takes time to get used to training first thing in the morning, I am used to it now, I do it every day at 5am and now I love it, but it took a while!

3. Your body is not fully warmed up that early in the morning, it can take a while to warm up especially on winter mornings, and this can be an issue avoiding injuries.

4. Your motivation can suffer. Its not always easy to get up at 5am for a session, and your mood will vary especially when the honeymoon period has come and gone.

5. It can affect your social life, getting up early every single day to train will mean you hitting the sack far earlier, and your bed times may differ quite a bit with the rest of your household.

I train people all times of day, and everyone performs super well, and theres no science to say one time is better than the other.

Whatever you decide, just make sure you keep hitting the sessions no matter what!

Education through exercising is vital in your development. You need to seek out the best ways to achieve often constant moving targets in terms of strength, lung capacity and muscular endurance.

Targets change because a good programme will take you to your initial targets relatively quickly, once you get there you will naturally want to

If you carry on doing the same old thing, not only will you become bored, you will not get the results you really wanted in the first place.

Moving your body in all sorts of different ways is important to constantly test yourself. Doing endless sit ups is not going to do it, and we never do sit ups anymore anyway to get the best out of your core.

Personally I accept the fact that I need to keep learning throughout my career to achieve a better and better results for everyone I train. If I don’t do this, then I become mediocre myself at what I do, and that is unacceptable to me.

There is no reason why you cannot keep changing your own exercise programme, as long as it still has purpose and direction, and it takes you to where you want to go. Don’t do any exercises that you cannot feel or you wonder what benefit they are bringing you.

All the exercises i show everyone should be felt immediately, and the feedback of whoever I am training is ultra-important to see if any adjustments need to be made in that particular movement.

Always keep striving for more by changing things up and make sure there’s a plan to go with it!

We concentrate on a bigger variety of training at the gym all the time, and that trend is very likely to continue with new ways of rising you to the highest level you can possibly be all the time.

The one thing you need to concentrate on doing is giving it your best effort, and adjusting to the new demands I put in front of you. I never ask anyone to do something I don’t think they can do, so have trust you are always going very much in the right direction.

If you go through the motions, you are likely to only get mediocre results and not develop in the way you really could.

If you focus on results, and give it your best every time, then the benefits you will get out of your training will be substantial and constantly surprise you in a pleasant way. Your body can respond to anything and this is why constant adjustment to your training programme is vital, and not something you should just think about
now and again.

If you hit outside work twice a week, then ignore it for the next two weeks then you are letting yourself down in terms of the progress you can get. If you finally get used to doing pull ups on the bar and you become good at deadlifts for example, and then you ignore them and only do lat pulldowns for your back instead, your body will notice this and dramatically slow down the results you have suddenly become used to.

The great thing about constantly being aware of the results you are getting is that you become totally aware of your eating too, you know that if you don’t eat well, then there is no way you can keep putting in meaningful efforts on your training, its impossible over the longer term.

Aim high and keep taking on new challenges!

Thursday, 20th February

Now is the time you should be combining your outside work more with your traditional gym workouts. This is always the best way to get results.

It’s lighter till around 545pm now all of a sudden and we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel literally! The opportunities you can get from this are endless, all you need is a little imagination.

The first time you decide to get out more, its usually the same feeling. You will be out of breath, you will be shocked at the effort required again, and you will feel a lot more out of condition than you thought you were. You will know at that precise moment that you have to something about that horrible feeling, and feeling a lot better whilst doing such workouts become a priority for you.

The good news is that you will get used to it the more you do it.

When you practice anything, you are bound to get used to it and get better at it.

So when I give you difficult choices outside, the ultimate goal is to get you fitter and stronger, get your lung capacity up to respectable levels, and really drive down your body fat levels down to the figures you really want.

These goals are always vital, going through the motions will not get you anywhere and you know it deep down. Getting out of your comfort zone is vital to keep the consistently good results coming in!
