May 26th Thursday

If you are developing momentum, you’re into your training, you are even more careful on what you eat, you are ultra positive on your health, you are beginning to receive compliments and life is on a roll.

Isn’t it much easier to be on a good path? There’s been enough chat on here about being on a downer,  being negative and puzzling how to get back on track. Life has changed for the better for some I am glad to report.

Being on a good track is a massive positive, and enables you to exercise without too much bother. Motivation is never a problem because you feel you’re close to the top of your game. Life is going to going to be good and you’re confidence is high. There is no better feeling.

Remember this feeling when you fall out of shape in the future, because you’re in the groove now and its easy to remember how it is right now. In fact, if you are feeling good now, it’s a good idea to write down how you feel in your diary and you can look back on how you did it in the future if you ever get  into trouble again with your health and weight, because they are very much interrelated!!!

We all say that we wish we were 21 again, but no all of us were in amazing shape at 21. I know lots of people I train are in better shape at 51 than 21. I have many individuals who would certainly out-perform most 21 year olds, and I have some 60 year olds entering marathons and triathlons for the first time ever!!

People are living longer these days and with a far better quality of life. The ingredients will always be eating as much healthy and natural food as possible, and training smart with a real purpose. Throw in plenty of good sleep and a good amount of water every day and you have the perfect formula.

You may deviate from it from time to time, be sucked into faddy weight loss methods/clubs from time to time, but you will always need to come back to this perfect formula so why waste time?!!!!

April 21st 2011

How many of you now can’t eat so much chocolate or drink so much alcohol if you have already done well with your fitness plan and got to where you want to be?

This is what usually happens when you change your diet for the long term, and make exercise a very normal part of your life.

Other comments I get are that the once fantastic tasting sugary foods are now making you sick, because all that sugar is now becoming a sugar overload, and your body responds in a not very good way, in fact all that extra sugar as a one off will most likely make you feel sick and very low in energy usually an hour after consuming it.

If excess refined sugary foods have become a part of daily life for you, then you are at high risk of developing diabetes at some stage, and just ask anyone who now has diabetes what an uncomfortable existence that is!

Foods were meant to be sampled in their natural state, so whenever you can do this will be to your significant advantage.

We are now coming up to easter bank holiday, which means from now until Monday offers a significant window of making a pig of themselves for most people. Some people actually will go out and consume as much sugar and refined as possible, and then bemoan next Tuesday on how lethargic they are feeling, and how they have to get that weight off!!

Then you have two bank holidays next week so what do  most people do? They write off the next week again and overdo AGAIN!!!

This is of course a perfect example of a vicious circle, and these can be very hard to recover from. The monumental effort to get going again can seem exactly that….MONUMENTAL!!! These types of efforts can’t happen all the time, so the long and steady route is the way to go….FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! I MEAN!!!

Tried and tested is the way to go and make your life far more stable in health and fitness terms!!!!

April 20th 2011

The outstanding weather we are having should make you get outside this week, there cannot be any reason not to.

An American friend came over the weekend and couldn’t believe how much Llanelli and burry port had changed and the value now of having the millennium coastal on our doorstep.

The transition from a heavy industrial town to an area of outstanding natural beauty has been nothing short of inspirational and is begging you to get out there and use it every day, especially with the Mediterranean like weather out there the last few days!

Its never too late in the year to exercise as we are only barely a third of the year gone, so theres plenty more to achieve this year if you really get your head down.

A big achievement for most of you will be committing to exercising 3 times a week and making healthy eating a regular part of your daily life. This is a major move in enabling you much more likely to live longer, and a much higher quality of life!

Most people I know who are healthier and live the right lifestyle are usually much more optimistic in life, they approach the challenges in life in a much more positive way and are generally far more pleasant to be around as they don’t seem to suffer from the mood swings that most people with a poor diet suffer from.

Show me a person who drinks every day and you have someone who is highly irritable, and someone who usually takes their moods out on those closest to them.

Show me someone who smokes, eats chocolate and crisps most of the time and you mostly see someone who performs with very low energy levels, has skin issues at times, and internally is struggling to keep good health levels up.

I don’t have to tell you ANY of this, you know it yourselves!! You read it in the paper every day with endless studies done by doctors and scientists, the facts are there so you don’t have to take my word for it!!!

We are on a great run weather wise, the big question has to be “are you going to take advantage of it?”!!!!!

18th April

If you are struggling with your back, your knees etc and you know you are not able to run right now, or for the foreseeable future, then there is an answer that can sort your problems out!!!

Power walking up hills can sometimes be a lot harder than running on the flat, and i have done a ton of it today already!

If you pick the very worst hills by your house, then you have a choice of the best venues for your great walking workouts. Power walking is not just going at some leisurely pace, and you claim to have had a great workout, thats not what it is at all. It is about having great workouts that can be as hard as any run or bike ride, all you need is the right attitude and the right intensity.

So say you have a 30 yard hill by your house, aim first of all to walk it as quickly as possible in one go, if you are out of breath and feel well worked, then this is the hill for you!! Then you should aim to do it multiple times with adequate rest in between each one, aiming for a maximum of around 8.

As the weeks go by and 8 is much more comfortable, start your backward walking, and aim for 8 backward power walks too, this will thoroughly fry your thighs, hamstrings and bum and you will be very well worked!!!

POWER walking is exactly that, walking with “power”, this is achieved by swinging your arms vigorously to achieve sufficent power in your legs, and encourages great momentum in your walking and therefore in overall speed. This gets your heart rate up very well and demands great gulps of air, meaning your lungs will be working very well.

Theres no excuse not to get out there so lets give it a go!!!

12th April 2011

Great things happen in your body when you first start exercising. You body responds well to moving around more, and your body likes the feeling of doing things again, and you develop your confidence as you go.

Your body responds very well in particular when you adjust your food intake. Most people who go from eating processed food to more natural, fresh foods will experience increased energy levels, and an inner confidence that they are going to get healthier if you keep your habits up.

Most of the measurements i take on individuals who start an exercise programme look a lot better at the end of their first month. Progress is relatively quick and 4-6 weeks can make a good difference to anyone as long as they show commitment. Two inches off your waist will always look and feel great, and your clothes will feel a lot looser too. I always tell people if they are carrying a lot more weight than they should, that the biggest worry they will have is changing their wardrobe!!!

The trick is to keep these exciting feelings going well into the times when the novelty factor of keeping fit and healthy has gone, and make it part of your daily life and make it become routine.

This is why routines are important so you end up doing healthy things without even thinking about it, which is exactly where you want to be.

Your workout becomes “your” time when you relax, get rid of stress and you find yourself again after a long day, or even before you embark on your challenging day. If you can keep your workouts going in times of stress in your life, you know that you have fully integrated a healthy lifestyle into your life and you should already be relatively fit and healthy, and have some good ability in terms of exercise of all kinds.

A true athlete and i mean that in a broad term, should be able to do outside exercise such as running, cycling, hill walking as well as work inside with resistance workouts, and you should be able to combine them too. You should be versatile and open to new ideas, no need to spend all your time in the gym, there are endless and exciting ways to keep fit and the gym is just one angle you can use. You will learn more about your body in different environments so lets keep it varied and keep doing your best!!!
