Friday 26th August

The end of the week is here and have you followed my tips on eating well from monday morning right through until now? If you have, chances are that you have performed well all week, you have dropped some body fat, you feel tighter, you are more cheerful and you have a lot to shout about. You can relax a bit tonight, have a meal you may not normally have and gradually relax as you get into the weekend.

Enjoy your sunday lunch and gradually ease back so you’re fired up to go again on monday.

Let me clarify  the first paragraph, this doesnt mean going mad all weekend eating as much junk as possible!!! “Easing up” doesn’t mean that, it means you can be a bit looser on your diet and it doesn’t mean drinking like a fool all weekend either!!! Nothing wrong with a drink, but there is plenty wrong with drinking flat out from friday evening right through until sunday night!!! So better to get that all sorted out because people interpret things differently from others.

Does that sound sustainable to you? I don’t think that lifestyle is so bad at all!!!

So monday until most of friday is very good eating patterns, saturday is fun too and have a bit of what you fancy, and sunday more of a relaxing day. This isnt killing yourself on some kind of spartan regime, this is achievable in my eyes and should enable you to drop body fat on a regular basis, perform well in your valuable workouts and really be one of the out-performers in life!!!

Your foundations are the difference between getting into shape without even thinking or worrying about it, or going through the horror and disappointment of yo-yo dieting, which MOST people unfortunately go through.

You will end up paying a fortune on getting into and out of shape in your lifetime. You don’t need to do that anymore surely?!!!! The information is here and its time to make it happen!!!

The lack of honesty in assessing one’s training is similar to someone valuing their own house.

In 2007, everyone thought they were a millionaire due to their supposed value of their own house. This delusion can last a couple of years until they realise they have to be realistic and come down at least 20% if they really want to sell their house. Some people still won’t admit to themselves that their version of Buckingham palace is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, and in this climate, that is likely to be not a lot.

With your training and fitness exploits, there may have been a peak in your life too, when everything was going along swimmingly, life was great and you got used to receiving compliments all the time on your appearance. You probably look fantastic, you feel amazing and people admired your dedication for your health.

Then the “crash” may have come.

Life is not so easy now and its no longer “easy” to get into shape, although it is never actually easy to get into shape!

You may give sporadic efforts, you may give your all for a couple of weeks, but everything seems like swimming in treacle this time around.

The great news is though that there are reasons for it, and like yesterday it comes down to self-assessment and self-honesty.

Those people I train when they are in top shape discover this new honesty in themselves. Once they realise they have to adopt a certain healthy lifestyle to be where they want to be, suddenly get real with themselves and its fantastic to see.

They will tell you how glad and relieved they are to leave the alcohol behind, the fatty foods behind, the faddy exercise methods behind, once they did this they tell me, life becomes joyous once again and being in great shape is worth a million dollars, after all you can never put a price on excellent health.

If you’re at the peak or in a trough, its time to get real and realise what it takes to be at the top of your game, no excuses and no “but’s” because you know secretly the way to the top so lets do it!!!

The best way to get in shape for now, and for life is to stop everyone scamming you out of your hard earned money and do the things you KNOW that will work.

I really think that some of latest diet books really think we are stupid, that we have too much money and we want to give it to them, or they may actually believe that some of their stuff actually works in a short term faddy type of way despite the longer term consequences?

Someone asked me about the dukan diet again this morning, you know the one which advocates mostly protein in your diet. The great news is that this diet DOES work to lose weight, just like the atkins diet works and its a simple principle they use. One gram of protein has around 4 calories just like one gram of carbs has. One gram of fat on the other hand has 9 calories.

So you can see if you eat mostly protein and not in huge quantities, you will be ingesting less calories every day and therefore be successful at losing weight. Also, protein in no bad thing and will make you feel full for around 4 hours at a time, which is a good thing.

The negatives only start some way into the diet.

What happens when your energy levels eventually go down? Your training suffers due to your lack of energy and therefore endurance? What happens when you have problems going to the toilet (it had to be said) due to you eliminating certain food groups? Are you really never going to eat carbs ever again? And what happens if you do? Are you going to have some almighty splurge on bread and potatoes or chocolate and chips? Going mad on carbs because you haven’t eaten them for so long? Nobody i know has successfully eliminated carbs long term without any side effects!

So if you want to be healthier in losing weight, trying eating healthy proteins such as fish, chicken etc with plenty of vegetables, for lunch and evening meal, eat fruit in moderation as well as a small handful of nuts, drink more water for added fat loss and keep your carbs under control, its all about portion sizes the size of your fist, that includes rice, pasta, and potatoes, and wholemeal and wholegrain versions too.

Everything in moderation and a wide variety of foods, this is the best and most SUSTAINABLE way to lose body fat AND firm up!!!

Tuesday 7th June

We talked about yesterday the ability to work around injuries, instead of working through them which tends to make the injuries worse of course. Being flexible and being able to change your programme is very important.

The other issue is recovery and how important sleep and eating well is.

If you eat a variety of fresh natural foods, this usually means you will be ingesting a lot of vital nutrients that your body needs and when your body is down, such as when you are injured, these nutrients are even more important not only to make you feel better but to heal the damage that has already been done by the injury.

The process of an injury usually starts with your twisting or pulling something quite badly, then usually depending on the severity of the injury, your point of injury will bleed internally and the damage still goes on.

This is why ice is applied as soon as possible to injuries so the healing process can begin immediately, and you don’t waste time.

The ice will also bring inflammation down quickly of course, further speeding up the healing journey.

Then when you injury has stabilised, its important to keep bringing in, as I keep saying all the time, fresh natural food when possible to enable food to have its true healing power. People may scoff at this but your cells really appreciate good food coming in all the time because then it can go about fixing the injury, and much quicker than if you went on some kind of junk food diet which will only delay the process!!!

So if you can follow these rules, sleep then becomes paramount. If you get as much uninterrupted sleep as possible, your body will be in full recovery mode and will do its very best to fix itself in record time!

Its also paramount NOT to antagonise the injury again by working through it, you need to work AROUND it and train smart not to upset the incredible healing process your body is now on.

For the record, alcohol is the worst thing you can consume, as your body has to get rid of this foreign substance before it can heal again!

Some injuries are worse than others but these principles will help A LOT every time you have the misfortune of injury!!

Your progress doesn’t mean much unless it impacts your life in a positive way.

It also doesn’t matter much if you feel that nobody cares about your progress. Having someone interested in what you do is a very underrated factor in your progress and confidence.

This is why people join diet clubs and gyms, its nice for people to talk about their progress with like minded people.

The weekly weigh in’s with diet clubs are a ritual for some people, and the pat on the backs or lets pull your socks up attitude seems to work for some people.

I’m definitely in that line of work too, a serious part of my job is not only constantly analysing an individuals performance and pushing them onto new highs, its also about motivating the individual and pushing the right buttons, especially when things are not going their way.

You can do it another way. You could ask a friend to help you out and witness your progress. That could be from measuring your waist with a tape measure once a month, to witnessing your weigh in’s every week, or just once a month.

Having a friend you can trust to help you can be very valuable with your training too. If you have someone who will become a training partner of yours, then you can keep pushing each other to new heights. Perhaps on one day, you will not feel great and your training partner will be able to push you to get through the workout, then on another day you will feel top of the world, and you will be able to get the best out of your friend.

This is why its always good to share your progress, it matters heck of a lot more when you share success, unless you are a very private person and like the rewards of purely individual pursuits, and don’t need to share it with anyone else.

Whatever works for you, then use it and keep using it time after time. The only thing that matters is sustainable progress and you being in great health. You always have to think about your health and fitness programme and change your approach from time to time. Life never stays still and you have to change to keep up with it, but as long as you train a minimum of 3 times a week and eat well 80% of the time, you’re going to be doing well!
