A story in the newspapers yesterday has brought many questions and may be needlessly so, but they must be answered so here goes.

RUNNING MAKES YOU FAT! Was the headline in at least The Independent and probably the daily mail (the most sensationalist paper of the lot! And interesting to know that they supported the nazi party before world war 2!).

The bottom line of the article was that many people been interviewed were complaining that they never lost weight for years despite their running efforts.

They developed bad knees and backs, sometimes weak ankles and the results were never worth it!!!!

The stories kept on coming in like people obsessed with distorting the truth.

If you carry too much weight, you WILL be putting a strain on by running on hard surfaces and longer distances. This will affect your joints and back and the pain will be magnified that much more if you wear poor trainers.

A 200 pound runner will put 600 pounds of pressure through their joints because of the pounds, so its important to do everything right.

The biggest thing I haven’t mentioned here is FOOD INTAKE.

What was common throughout these stories was that none of them had really changed their diet. They were still eating lots of sugar and lots of saturated fat.

Another common factor was that they would have a big “treat” if they did well on a run, and that often included a trip to a fast food outlet, or to the cake shop!!!

It could be an excuse to drink more alcohol or to eat a fried breakfast.

The story continued to run and this was the recurring theme. People really thought that they could run off anything, and they deserved to be in shape despite eating badly.

The fact is you cannot “run off” a bad diet, the calories will be too overwhelming. Say you have a great run and you burn 400-600 calories, that can easily be outdone by a couple of beers of glasses of wine, you can easily eat 1000 calories at McDonalds!!!! Or more!!

Unless you change your diet to good fresh natural foods, you’re always going to be one of those who may complain that “running makes you fat”!!!!

Change today and get the results  you really deserve!!!

Thursday 22nd September

Every day I bump into someone who I know has trained for most of their life. I hear a lot of inspiring stories on how well they are doing. Unfortunately I hear a lot of stories about how certain things have happened and they have had to have a break in their training.

Then follows that period when they promise themselves they have  to get back into things, and that time is always usually a week away. This week can lead to weeks or even months.

This is the number one reason for me why individuals get out of shape, or never get into the kind of shape they once dreamt about getting into.

If you don’t train, then changes will never happen to your body.

This is why the actual “doing” is always more important that copying some complicated training routine from a magazine.

Rather than make life difficult for yourself, “just do it” as the old saying goes.

If you tried asking people you haven’t seen yourself for a while how their training was going, I would put money on it you would get similar answers to me. People in general are the same wherever you go and its never easy to be in shape all the time, very few people manage this.

Those people you ask who are having a break are maybe the ones you need to ask yourself if they would like to join YOU in your efforts to get in shape?!!!

You cant beat training with someone else to get more out of yourself!

The only downside training with someone else is that sometimes they let you down, and this can be most unhelpful in your efforts to get your sessions in!

So as long as you can hook up with someone who is trustworthy and motivated, and a similar fitness level as yourself, its an absolutely fabulous idea for you to get your own “training buddy” and you help your friend out too!

Anything that gets you actually doing instead of talking about it will be massively beneficial for you!!!

Monday, September 19th

How many of you are finding reasons TO exercise instead of finding reasons NOT to exercise?!!!

I can tell you right now its only a mindset change that you need to change things around right now.

I have had some hilarious and unbelievable reasons from a lot of people on why they can’t exercise.

From needed an hour to get ready first thing in the morning for a workout, to not having time to exercise at all, to not having the right trainers or time to get a pair of trainers, to not being the “type” to train, to not having a training partner, to exercise “not being for me”, to just about anything!!!

The ONE thing  that these individuals have in common every single time, is that THEY ARE NOT IN SHAPE!!!! So the problem lies in that!!! They cannot offer a position for their comments because they are deeply unhappy anyway because they are not in shape, the worst thing about it all is that they CAN get in shape with a bit of effort and commitment, but somehow it is beyond them?!!!

So find me someone really out of shape and i will show you ten excuses on why they aren’t (according to them anyway).

Change your mindset RIGHT now and the excuses will stop, the action will start and excellent progress will naturally follow!!! This is a sure thing!! Time after time i have seen individuals change their state of mind and start looking for reasons to train, to eat well and get to bed early.

THIS IS ALL YOU NEED AND THE SOONER YOU ACCEPT IT ALL, THE QUICKER YOU WILL GET IN SHAPE AND FEEL AS ENERGETIC AS YOU WERE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD!!!

This is monday, its the start of the week and your start of the big mindset change that can literally change your life. No time for negatives because the positives will always crush the negatives in my book.

If you have started already then congratulations, if you haven’t then don’t delay and waste another day, the time is now and less than 14 weeks to christmas already

Thursday 15th September

14 weeks to Christmas and an ideal opportunity to put a sequence of events in place to make sure you’re in great shape by then.

Number one is that you have to WANT to do it. Of course everyone WANTS to be in shape, but how many of you are really willing to go through the kind of effort needed to do so?

I see so many people believe it or not asking for OTHER people to get into shape. If someone else has to ask for you to get into shape, then there is a sincere lack of will to do it in the first place.

If you have a lack of will, then what hope have you got?

The abundance of will and NEED to do something will be the driving force when times get tough.

For example, I was talking to the coach of an under-achieving rugby team the other day, and complained that they always start off well, falter big time mid-season and then fall away completely at the end of the year.

When I dug under the surface of the problem, the issues on why these performances were falling away soon became apparent.

The most amount of players they had out for training was in the summer months just before the season started, which explained their excellent start to the year, in fact 30-35 players.

Then when the bad weather came, it went down to 10 players believe it or not.

Then because of under preparation, they start losing and the turn out’s dwindle to sometimes 4-6 players!!!

Then you don’t have to guess too hard that the season more or less collapses due some heavy losses. The players who were then tempted to come back often just write that season off and promise to  come back the next season!!!

So does that team “want it” enough?

 Definitely not it seems.

You will find the most successful teams or individuals are the ones who practice the most, with most intensity and don’t have big gaps in terms of weeks or months in the time they train or play.

UP TO YOU!!! 14 WEEKS TO GO!!!!

Wednesday 6th September

Being a parent again to a new born, it brings back the feelings of lack of sleep and all the tiredness and irritability that goes with all of this!

This is particularly hard the first few weeks and it can definitely affect one’s training quite a lot.

To get over this, you have to take out the stuff thats going to hinder your energy levels in the first place and concentrate on the basics to get huge amounts of energy in your life.

A lot of people think that the first thing to go should be your workouts!! What absolute rubbish, its been proven scientifically that workouts give you MORE energy and not less, get your body used to exercise on a regular basis and it will reward you many times over with impressive energy stores.

Next thing people look at is food, some think that must always have chocolate bars at hand because “they will have energy needs” as a new parent but they completely miss the point. I have been through programmes with many new parents and they always report that when they eat healthy, their energy levels remain constant and on good levels, their levels of tolerance go way up and their mood swings are pretty much a thing of the past, all in trying times of course when you have a new baby!!!!

So when you are naturally very likely to miss a lot of sleep, your nutritional and training plan need to be bang on.

I am employing all of these tactics right now and still looking for progress, because if you don’t look for improvement any more, your brain shuts something off and im convinced it doesnt allow you to make the same physical gains you have perhaps become accustomed to!!!

Instead of making this a much more of struggle than it needs to be, get eating well and when your doctor approves it, start exercising gently again with specific goals in mind!!!
