How you do you know if you have had a great workout or on the right kind of diet?

Well, you should just know if you are doing the right kind of workout FOR YOU! Same goes with the food side.

The sad truth is that there are many, many people trying to scam you out of your money with various ways of getting into shape.

Some of the biggest liars and scam merchants are the weight loss clubs, when will they learn that they need to stop helping people lose weight the wrong way.

Losing weight quickly (5 pounds a week on occasions) and in a totally UNSUSTAINABLE WAY, is not the right way to do things, I hope people will wake up to these charlatans!

97% of these people will pile all this weight back AND, get this FIVE PER CENT MORE on average when they come off this crazy way of eating.

Avoid them at all costs.

Then there is the charlatans of shakes and bars, you know the ones I am talking about, charging you a fortune to drink shakes and bars all day, then one meal in the evening.

Then you come off the diet soon enough, and then REALLY pile the weight on in double-quick time. The people peddling these crazy ways of eating ought to be locked up, and I really believe this due to the misery they cause on individuals desperate to finally get their excess weight off.

With these people I would throw in the people who advise you to exercise on a plate, and charge you a costly sum for doing this. They are backed by ZERO scientific evidence and the people who still fall for this marketing rubbish and downright lies really ought to know better by now surely!!!

Theres a million other exercise programmes out there, most of them trying to get your hard-earned money out of you seemingly all the time.

Its time to fight back and not let them con you anymore. I would name and shame them but for legal reasons I cannot, but I suspect many of you have been conned by them already.

The good news is that most of them DON’T stay in business for very long anyway. Longevity comes from doing the right thing all the time, or at least most of the time and this is why tried and tested ways back up by science will always work for you 100% of the time!!!

Put your trust in results, and ignore the con men of the health and fitness industry!!

Monday, 2nd July

Heard the one about its too expensive to eat well and healthy? Well, i have too! Plenty of times!!! Too many times to mention in fact!

Well, statistics don’t necessarily back this one up!

Times have moved on and its heck of a long time since Tesco was the only game in town!

In llanelli, now there are far more choices and we do not have to put up with a lack of service or rudeness from any type of business anymore!

We have Aldi’s, Lidls, Morrisons and Asda of course, all offering extremely good value for money.

Due to the harsh economic climate, they are all going out of their way to become cheaper, especially on a lot of the basics.

Some people used to look down on aldi’s and lidl’s a few years ago, but when you actually try some of their fruit and vegetables, they are often much tastier than most of the bigger supermarkets. And the price difference can be substantial!

So if you are committed  to eating well and healthy, this may be the place for you!

If you say you havent got time to cook healthy, then a stir fry doesnt take long.

A great invention has been the slow cooker, which works big time in my house especially with three children!!! This is a great way of getting all your veg into your meals, and tasting absolutely fantastic too!!! You need to try it!!

Please don’t give the excuse of “whoever i live with cooks for me and i cant eat well”, because this is absolutely unacceptable!!!

Take charge now, use the so called “discount” supermarkets, in my book Aldi and Lidl blows away the big boys in terms of freshness and taste, so act on it now.

If you still say its too expensive, then how can you justify all the other junk thats usually in the trolley?!!!

Get your priorities straight and get eating well and right!!!

Thursday, 14th June

Salt is very much in the news today, as the newspapers list quite a lot of well-known high street restaurants who make meals that are very overloaded with salt, which is many times your daily recommended amount!

These are often child friendly restaurants that are advertising themselves as “freshly made”, cooked on premises etc, when the reality is that the salt added to the food often outdoes any of the benefits of the vegetables etc.

Salt is one of the biggest contributors to blood pressure problems, as well as links to heart disease and certain other illnesses.

The reasons why a lot of these restaurants use so much salt is to preserve the food (make it last longer) and make it taste that much nicer again. This is playing right in the hands of children’s food as kids always go by taste first, and never of course worry about the nutritional content, not even on their list of concerns!

So naturally, if there’s far too much salt in the kids food, then the adult meal is likely to be over the top on salt too. This compromises the adult’s health and if done on a regular basis, will lead to ill health at some stage in the future.

Another bad situation developing from this is that kids and adults soon become accustomed to salt-laden food, and this soon becomes the benchmark of taste for future meals out and more importantly at home.

If you’re trying to make healthy snacks and foods for the kids, they will soon complain that the food doesn’t taste anything like when they “go out for food”, and your chances of keeping your child on a healthy diet go quickly downhill.

When your child  wants to go out and eat in these places every day, you know have a problem.

Another serious problem is the likes of Harvester, Nando’s etc who are peddling the myth that they serve healthy food, are getting away with it.

They say “eat fresh” and “come to us”, when the reality is eat sort of fresh (sometimes), and we will make you much more unhealthy than if you made your own meal from scratch in the house!!

This is why its better to eat out once a week max and choose carefully from the menu, avoiding unnecessary sauces and other cooking methods designed to make your food taste nicer, but really disguises a cheap and poor product in the first place!

Monday, 28th May

Everyone wants to get faster and stronger, and this is a common question when dealing with athletes of all sports, and juniors who really want to become professionals in any sport, or even the person who plays sunday morning football, who just wants to improve their game and take it to another level or two.

The techniques used to make this happen can be powerful, but before this takes place, the fundamentals must be in place to allow it all to happen.

For example, if an individual is carrying a couple of stone too much, then training JUST for speed is too limiting an approach, and can encourage injury.

If you are doing a speed and agility session, where explosive moves are often called upon, then if that person is quite a bit overweight, then the tensions on the hamstrings and groins can be overwhelming. The individual has to realise that when you carry too much weight, then your body mechanics don’t run as smoothly when you are carrying little or no extra weight, and its vital to build up gradually, rather than dive into a programme that puts too much strain on the body.

So before we touch on what it requires to become faster and more agile, you have to go back to the beginning.

Adjusting one’s diet so you can lose body fat at a steady rate is the first step.

Then making sure your exercise programme is sound, and you already familiar with the basics is another great starting point.

So if you are eating well and exercising properly, then over time you should achieve decent results and you should at some time be at your optimum weight, or at least fairly close to it. This would be the ideal time to step up your training onto the speed and agility stuff.

This will make sure you progress quickly still and avoid injury along your path of self-improvement to becoming a better athlete.

May 1st!

Start of the month and although you may not think it, it is after all MAY!!! Wild winds and rain may be greeting us but this is, in my experience anyway, THE best month when it comes to good weather, sunshine and warmer temperatures!

You may think the rest of the summer is in front of us, and it is, but may is usually the big statement when it comes to announcing the summer to come, or at least giving us a couple of weeks of fantastic weather.

May is also the month when we realise if we have been working hard throughout the winter or not! I have been banging on here all winter long about how much you will appreciate all the hard work gone in…………..by the time may comes around and now we are finally here!

May on the opposite side of the scale is the month when people panic, go on all sorts of crazy diets and try to lose weight very quickly and this means usually TOO quickly. Faddy diets are waiting to steal your hard earned money again, a kind of a “smash and grab” situation that they are used to doing, because they know their diets are not sustainable and this is why their classes go up and down so much.

May is the perfect month for you to put in your calendar so that you can remind yourself how important it is to train all year round, and how it is virtually impossible to get to may and somehow be in shape in two weeks flat! You know it can’t happen secretly and as long as you learn this vital lesson, then you know you will improve from this day onwards.

This is what life is about, constant improvement and looking to better yourself and find ways how you can become a better version of yourself, in all sorts of ways!

Start May well and stay positive for a big summer!!
