Summer in october

The warmer weather may be the perfect excuse to get back to normal with your outdoor training, and with the average temperature this weekend likely to be 20 degrees, there has never been a better time to get out on the bike and go for a run and go for a walk, not necessarily all three of course but hopefully you will know what I mean!

This is your chance to set a marker in the sand and really go for it again, and tell yourself that this is the time to do it once and for all.

Its also a good time to remind yourself that next spring and next summer will be here soon enough too. Its not going to be good enough then to hang out in baggy jumpers and coats to hide how much weight you may or not put on. You will want to show your improvements off.

The hard work is always done over the winter months and it starts right now if you really want to make a spectacular difference to yourself. The most important workouts are always those you don’t really want to do and the news is that the dark mornings are already here, and cold evenings are waiting around the corner after this hot spell. It is a false dawn before the winter so lets make the most of it and think of the rewards that will be yours next spring.

There will be no baggy jumpers or baggy bottoms next year, you will be able to show off your transformation if you really apply yourself right now, spring will be full of compliments if you just show up for your own workouts and shop well for good food!

My guess is that you will be able to see lots of people on bikes etc this weekend in the warm so lets make the start right now. The same people are not likely to be out in the dead of winter and that’s the challenge, to keep your training up during the harder, darker months, when the real progress is made so lets give it your best, starting this weekend!!!

Show up and fight!

Pretty amazing progress is within all our grasp.

You must have heard some people who have made it big in life say that as long as you really focus on what you’re doing, what you’re trying to achieve, and the most important thing, YOU NEVER GIVE UP, then you can achieve absolutely anything you put your mind to.

If you haven’t got to where you want to go yet, and if you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you will probably be honest enough to admit where you’re going wrong.

You will have probably had wonderful periods of training and eating, you will probably have had some mediocre periods of eating too, and nobody can expect you to be wonderful all the time. But as long as you keep showing up all the time, or most of the time, then all good things await you. You have to trust me on that.

The more experienced you get, hopefully the down times should get less and the good times should form the majority of the year.

Each and every one of you tell me you feel lousy when you don’t train or eat badly, and especially when you do both.

All of this comes down to self-confidence or more likely, lack of self-confidence at times. Im not expecting you to be this super confident super achiever type of person. What I am expecting though is to show up in your workouts, when you make your big shop of the week, I wouldn’t expect to see white bread, biscuits, crisps, oven chips etc in your shopping trolley.

I’d expect a certain standard and that is very achievable for all of you.

The chocolate, crisps and wine stops in the petrol station during the week are not acceptable if you want to be in shape, they’re really not. It’s a free country for sure and we have a choice on how we look and feel. You know how to do it by now, you know that faddy diets will eventually drive you crazy and overweight, you know that moving is far better than sitting and you know the wonderful feeling of getting fitter and fitter.

So lets do this thing! Aim to improve every week but if you don’t EVERY week, then that’s no problem, but I guarantee if you show up all the time for your workouts, you take pride in your food shopping and what it contains, you don’t drink alcohol in the week, GOOD and even GREAT things will happen to you throughout every week, every month for the rest of your life.

Are you going to stick it this time? Or are we going to keep having this conversation?

TIME TO CHANGE RIGHT NOW!

Get inspired, its good for you!

Not many could not have been moved by the excellent ryder cup at celtic manor yesterday and its exciting finish. Im not exactly golf’s biggest fan but yesterday certainly excited a lot of people including me. Truly inspiring would be a fair description.

This sort of spectacle will get more people to play golf simply because they were inspired, and in my book thats always a good thing.

Many of you fail to get inspired because the day in day out nature of exercising may not be the most exciting thing in the world. The inspiration comes every time when you receive complements about your appearance, this isnt reserved just for others, it can be for you too if you put the work in, honestly!!!

This type of effort though requires you to be positive in everything you do and put health very high on your list of priorities of life.

Like we always say, its easy to be negative and not doing anything. Thats the easiest thing in the world, to become Jeremy Kyle’s number one fan and not move at all from the settee each day, except maybe into your car, another sitting down experience which wont help you in your quest for fat loss much!!

Changing from your old lifestyle to an active new lifestyle full of vitality isnt as hard as it sounds.

All it takes is daily action and taking every day one at a time.

You have every chance to do it too because its all about you. Unlike a team sport, theres nobody esle to rely on, really theres not. Every single thing you put into your programme, you will get 100% out in terms of results. If you let yourself down by not exercising or eating badly or both, its your fault and you cant blame anyone but yourself.

I think there is the individual in all of us, this is your chance to finally become successful with your health. Some days even a walk in the fresh air will be considered a success, especially if you were only going to lay on the settee and be a slob for the evening!

Doing things outside your comfort zone will be the difference between having a million complements and having medicore results. Its easy to slob in front of the tv every night, deep down though you know thats not right and you’re wasting your life away.

Its tuesday so we have all week to send a new trend in your life!!!

Strength for everything…….even golf!!

Its interesting watching golf’s ryder cup and not only because of the scorelines, and whether europe or USA are going to win.

The physical demands on golf are now far more demanding than they used to be.

In years gone past and not so long ago, the sight of an overweight golfer was all too regular down the fairways of the world. It all changed though when the fitter, stronger, leaner athletes started coming along and started dominating the landscape in a big way!

This trend was led of course by Tiger Woods and started busting the myths about strength training not mixing at all with golf. The facts are that Woods trains harder than most athletes and the results are there for all to see in the game.

This was followed by Sergio Garcia, the spaniard who took strength and fitness training to brand new levels, and a collection of some of the world’s most important golf titles followed quite quickly.

The list of titles in world golf is now shared by the fittest athletes and results mean that the training methods of these guys are proven to be right.

Not only are results coming thick and fast, but injury prevention is working really well too. The fitter and stronger you are in key areas, the less injuries you are likely to have and if you do get an injury, the quicker you are likely to recover.

You may hear a lot about core muscles on your body and they are important to golfers more than anybody.

Your stomach, lower back, hamstring and thighs have never been so important on the fairway for all sorts of movements, especially rotation on the fairway. Golfers who train the correct way also tend to hit the ball further, around 30-40 yards according to latest research.

There are all sorts of reasons to workout hard if you are a golfer, and the champions will all back it up!!

Less of the why, more of the “do”!

One common question i get asked quite a lot is “how long do i have to keep this up?”, or “do i have to keep this up for ever and how can i  possibly do that?”!!

Okay, perhaps two or three questions there but they are more or less the same things. Some people don’t just get the fact that you must change your lifestyle for good and are often puzzled on why!

There is really too much thinking going on there and really not much “doing” going on. How many people do you know start fishing for example and buy all the waders, the expensived rod and tackle etc, and go out fishing a couple of times and never go out again.

Lots of people start any sport, any activity and never keep it up. Nothing wrong with that of course but when it comes to looking after your body, its best not to try and trash it too much, and its much better to look after it a bit better than you possibly do now.

Its like the person who keeps their car in pristine condition, shining it every week, taking it for a service regularly and then smoking and drinking every day, and taking no exercise and deriding anyone who does. Is that the meaning of irony i dont know!!

The fittest people i often see are the ones with the oldest workout gear, dont care how they look when they train but they DO care about HOW they train and the intensity they give to their workouts! Its this kind of no BS that i like in people.

These are really the people who DO, they get on with their lives, don’t brag about their workouts all day long to all and sundry, and usually are in pretty good physical condition.

Workouts are part of their daily life and very important for them to look and feel their best. Once feeling good about yourself is important to you, its then you will realise how important training well and eating well is to that very important goal.

You can’t plan every day for the rest of your life, you never know what is ahead, but what you can do is make yourself as prepared as possible for any eventually that comes your way. If you’re fit and healthy, thats a great place to be and gives your life solid foundation so lets get out there and do it!!
