Jan 2nd 2011

The  extended holiday means you won’t be back in work until at least tuesday, which means you have had more than enough time for exercise, if you haven’t then perhaps you may need to re-examine your time management or lack of!!

Anyone who has had a severe thrashing on the beer should be sick of it by now too. You should really be looking at giving your liver a break and flushing it out after all the abuse you have given it over the festive period.

What about the chocaholic’s? Have you said “lets finish the box off/boxes off, may as well they’ll only go in the bin”! If you have finished off, then do it now and give your body the break it finally needs after the attack of huge amounts of sugar christmas time. Christmas is associated with sugar nearly as much as it is with santa claus in some houses. It is the “must have” christmas toy every year and there’s always room at the inn for chocolate is a lot of people’s houses. Getting from this situation is mindset change and it can be done. How long depends on a lot of things and your commitment levels in particular, so make it 2011 the year that it all finally changes!!

Monday tomorrow is a bank holiday, but an excellent chance to freshen your life up in all ways so lets give it a new start!!

New Year’s day

Already been for my new years day run this morning and it felt pretty good indeed!!! Strangely quiet always on new years day, perhaps because most people were having a heavy one the night before.

Actually, recent polls don’t back that up anymore. According to latest research, 92.5% of people in Wales were spending new years eve at home at 12 o’clock, a dramatic change that started i believe in 2000, when pubs and taxi drivers got very greedy and started charging to get into their pubs, and taxis wanted double and sometimes treble time for their services. That greed has led to most pubs being full to the rafters, to being sad places where you are luck to get 10 people in at your local pub on new years eve. Sad but true down with us anyway.

New years day is the ideal time to get going, not talk about it, just get going!! Actions should be talking louder than words this year for you. Never have the words “just do it” been more important!! You can talk about it all you want, but it all really begins to matter when you get out there and exercise. If you have a hangover or not, then today is the ideal time to get out there and do something worthwhile, burn some body fat and fill your lungs with fresh air.

We will be doing another 12 week challenge this year, and im looking to start it around 17th january. I always think that people are not really ready until then, because it takes that long to get back into routines of work, family etc. In fact, this year studies proved that to be true. People who start their weight loss programmes after 15th january, tend to be more successful in their programmes. People who start on january 1st tend to fade away in late january according to a number of studies, this does not surprise me one bit!!

So try and get in some kind of routine, and kick off lighter activities today, and promise yourself that you’re going to stick it out for the whole of 2011 this time!! Its not a sprint and the tortoise will really beat the hare this time!!!

New Year’s Eve 2010

The number one resolution made around the world every year at this exact time, well 12 o’clock tonight anyway, is the one to adopt a healthier lifestyle and lose weight.

Despite these good intentions, it turns out 60 something per cent of our population is classed as overweight. 30 something per cent of them are classed as obese and in extremely poor condition.

Most people who make these resolutions only use words. They often forget that results that mean something require action on a regular basis, for the rest of your life in all cases and this seems like the speed bump in most people’s lives.

It’s really no good temporarily putting quick fixes in your life with faddy diets come January. Sustained commitment and sustained action are the keys to you being super successful or going around in circles again. Most people I know who have finally “got it” don’t really have to make “resolutions” again, because their habits are so engrained in their life now.

When exercising is important to you, you realise it’s the thing that usually makes you tick. When eating properly is part of your life, you notice quickly when you fall off the rails a bit, because your energy levels disappear and you become this hugely irritable person that’s not that nice to be around anymore!

Einstein said that its madness to do the same old thing every time and expect a different result.

This is what new year’s resolutions are all about, doing the same thing every year and expecting a different result, it doesn’t happen!! Weight loss clubs are expecting you to join them YET again and pay for the privilege of losing the weight and putting it ALL back on again AND MORE. Is this an annual experience for you or have you really had enough this time?!!!!

Perhaps the most important thing you can do this year is not only make your resolution, but promise to take sustained action at the same time, this way you are far more likely to succeed. Commit yourself for the whole of 2011, you will have some ups and downs but if you finish 2011 in better shape than now, then you will have been very successful, how many people can say that after all?

Have a good one!!!

Thursday 30th december 2010

If you had taken my advice yesterday, you would have made some kind of commitment to getting in shape again. If you had taken some action, you may be feeling stiff today due to your lack of activity over Christmas and the approach to the holiday period.

What also causes the stiffness is the often poor choice of food and drink over this time. The old saying goes that if you put rubbish fuel into your body, don’t expect it to drive well. If you keep on putting sub-standard food and drink into your body, it will splutter along and jump like someone driving a car for the first time.

If im honest, I am stiff myself today and really tired after starting back good sessions on Monday. Its important for me to get through this period so im back feeling great by next week. Some people will be off until 4th January but that is far too long for me. I WANT to be back in work this week so I can get back to feeling good full stop, im glad I made the decision to start back this week honestly.

Along with feeling good comes lower body fat, a harder and leaner body, much better energy levels and the inner drive that everyone has returning in a big way.

If I stayed off until 4th January, I would be lethargic, irritable, not wanting to do anything etc. The idea of going out for junk food every day and going shopping most days frankly makes me want to puke!! Most people it seems love to shop but I really think that there better things to do. There are only so many shops you can go through, after all these shopping parks are the same as any town or city, no individual shops around anymore unfortunately!

I would much rather be out in fresh air walking, running whatever, it just feels better and if you have been stuck in the house all over Christmas due to the snow and ice, NOW really is the time to get out there and feel much better about yourself. There is absolutely no excuse not be exercising right now, please don’t fall for the groundhog day faddy excuses for diets in the new year, PLEASE don’t do it, save your money and promise yourself that you won’t be fooled anymore with their false promises and sometimes damaging effect on your long term health! According to latest research, 97% of them DO NOT WORK over the long term!!

Let’s get out there and make a start!!!

Wednesday 29th December

The great news should be that you are back into your workouts, a lot better food is going into your body and y0u’re not having a drink every day anymore. If you can say yes to all of this, then you should be feeling heck of a lot better than on the 25th and 26th of december. There is nothing worse than that feeling of overdoing it and having to lay down because you feel so full!

If we’re honest we have all had that feeling more than once and most of us don’t learn from year to year! What we can learn from though is the length of time we do it for, that is when we restrict the damge the rich living does to out liver, our heart and our general health and wellbeing.

It’s said by many people at this time of year that they don’t know how all these people who drink every day do it! It must be terrible to feel that bad every day of your life!! Unimaginable to some of us but people do live like this and all towns have a hardcore of drinkers who hit the pubs every day. That hardcore group is becoming less and less though due to the effects of the alcohol and lack of proper nutrition. Problems associated with drinking every day in excess include high blood pressure, weak heart functtion, diabetes, depression, sleeping problems, behavioural problems, extremely low energy levels, domestic violence to name just a few!!!

It makes perfect sense then to live your life as far away from that type of lifestyle as possible. Nothing wrong at all with drink in moderation, but when its something you have to do every day or most days, its time to recognise it as a problem that can destroy your life in all areas. You will always find someone to drink with in the pub and as the old saying goes, misery loves company!!!

The next couple of days is the perfect time to get out there in the fresh air and do something worthwhile again in training terms. The ice and snow has finally gone, and the temperatures are not so bad either allowing you a full range of options to get yourself back feeling your best again. How long that takes will depend on how far you’ve gone off the rails. Your body has to re-balance after all. The general rule is that for every week you have off, it takes 1-2 weeks to get back to normal so work it out like that. Two weeks off may mean up to four weeks to get back to your best.

However long it takes, its time to take the first steps now and make it happen again!!!
