Much controversy has reigned over the last few years what diet you should be on, what time of the year you should adopt a different way of eating, whether protein and carbs are bad for you, is all fat bad for you, should you take supplements, should you take fat burners, are hard spirits such as whisky, vodka etc better for you than wine because of the lesser amount of calories, should you drink energy drinks instead of water, etc etc!!!

The best thing to do is ignore all the faddy diets because they are all out to make a fast buck out of you.

Once you realize how your body works, you will realize how your body works when you put food into your body and how it converts into fuel.

Remember the atkins diet? The one where it was pretty much all protein and you somehow went into “ketosis” and all you burned was fat as an energy source? Of course you would lose weight on it simply because you were eating less calories (protein has 4 calories per gram), and you were avoiding simple sugars, plus protein does make you feel fuller for longer.

The bad part was when people realized you needed carbs for energy, and science tells us that carbs are the body’s preferred energy source, please read any medical journal or paper on that.

Most if not all people who went on the atkins diet fell off it as its unsustainable, and the weight piles back on when you begin to eat normally again that’s for sure!

Most supplements on the market are scams, don’t only take my word for it, the EU is trying to ban 70% of the supplement market, and you should realize all that false advertising promising the earth is really one of the biggest scams so please don’t fall for it.

The alcohol part of hard liquor being better for you is false, wine will go through your system far easier, whiskey etc takes longer to go through and pouts undue stress on your system. The more natural a product or food going through your body, the better full stop!!

Energy drinks are needless unless you exercise over 60 minutes at a higher intensity, most people don’t do that so save your money again and drink natural water which most of the time doesn’t cost anything!

Good news will come from your training efforts if you remember what it was like to start in the first place.

Remember the times when you thought of beginning an exercise programme, you seemed to have plenty of enthusiasm, an urge to do well, and to take onboard a new approach on how to get fit and healthy. You rigorously followed the advice given, were proud of your much healthier supermarket trolley and knew how much those foods would do you good.

You took pride in drinking more water, and you noticed how much more alert you became throughout the day, and how much better you seemed to perform in your exercise sessions.

Then as you started to progress, you took even more of an interest, and you started to question on why you did certain movements, why you did certain exercises on certain days, and why you started to perform better on some days than others.

Then you started to take an even greater interest in your body fat improvements, how your resting heart rate was coming down, how your blood pressure was coming into a healthy range, how your waist was continuing to come down, and in general how much of an incredible difference you were making to yourself!!!

If you are currently stuck in a rut, you should remember how all of this felt, and with some effort you can easily get back there look and feeling your best!!

Friday 21st June

Finishing off your week is a big task for you today in terms of making sure finish it in the way you really want. There’s a million reasons to put off your workout today, you can’t be bothered as you have trained well enough all week, you are thinking of going out for a meal or drink early, you are too tired, you have had a stressful week in work and can’t face training, friday IS the weekend for you and you’re not going to train as its “relaxing time” and that’s that!!!

Finishing off the week well sends a message that you are a serious trainer, and not the type to make the kind of excuses like i just mentioned above. Those type of excuses hold people back from reaching their true potential, and shut off something in their brain that doesn’t allow them to reach the higher levels of human performance that would bring superior results.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with going away the weekend, having a great night out etc, but making sure you train before you go sets up your body in terms of pure conditioning.

When you train regular, eat regular good food full of nutreients, when you sleep well regularly, when you don’t eat too much fast food, don’t drink too much alcohol etc, you’re GOING TO IMPROVE FULL STOP!!!

Consistency is king.

The greatest satisfaction for me is seeing individuals do things they never thought possible.

For example, there is nothing better than seeing people overcoming the odds, and i have seen it happen time after time.

I have seen people who have never run due to certain disabilities, develop their own way of running and be successful at it.

I have seen people who haven’t run since school, then at 50 years of age run a marathon with 12 months of training.

I have seen people go from never shopping for clothes because they were a size 24-26, to shopping most weekends for clothes in “mainstream shops”, and have now become highly fashion conscious and can now literally choose any figure hugging clothes they want!

I have seen people who needed to lose 4 stone for certain operations, becoming triathletes after losing much of their weight through cycling, and developing unbelievable enthusiasm for their new found love of the bike!!

Good things happen to those who are willing to put plenty of hard work in during their exercise programme.

Good things happen to those who are willing to fill their grocery basket with good food, instead of the trash that many people choose.

Great things happen to those who stay the course, no matter what the obstacles along the way!!!

Last great day of the week in weather terms today maybe, but you should use it to your fitness advantage.

The british lions recently played a rugby match in hong kong, and most players agreed that it was the most humid, and hottest place they had ever played rugby. Anyone who has been to hong kong will testify that to be true, and the humidity is unlike anything you will experience.

I was in hong kong in 1994 and have never felt so uncomfortable staying still even!

We haven’t got anywhere near like the temperatures of places like hong kong, and will never achieve the humidity, BUT these temperatures we have right now (likely to reach 26 degrees today) do help us with our fitness.

The lions medical team said as much with the game in hong kong on how training and playing in such intense conditions would benefit their players in the weeks to come.

If you get used to training well on a day/night like today, then when it gets cooler you should be able to train at a higher level.

The one BIG THING I can say to be cautious about all of this warm weather training is drink water regularly throughout the day, and in particular THROUGHOUT your training session. Training in warm weather without water is downright dangerous!!! Please do not train without water, I hate to repeat myself but I have to over-emphasise this!!!

Hopefully, we are now out of the stage where you avoid training just because it is sunny and warm too! Its time to have a professional approach to your training if you are really serious about your training and health, and this is what this blog is about every single day, to encourage you to be healthier, fitter and perform at the best of your ability to help you reach your goals quicker!
