Not recording your progress is a sure fire way to get complacent and end up go through the motions with you exercise. Even going through the motions will give you a level of health that is far superior to being idle and sitting on the settee every day and not being active.

The question is though are you happy with not being your best, or at least being in a good range. Most people I know don’t want to be “average or below”, most people aspire to be better and it’s a human need to want the best for yourself and your family.

It turns out to be true that the “best” you hope for always starts with a good level of health, otherwise its hard to muster up the energy and enthusiasm to simply get things done.

A lot of us would like to be able to come home from work, call in the chip shop, eat whatever we want, have a couple of beers or glasses of wine, not have to get up in the morning and somehow be in fantastic shape!!!!

In real life, that is some kind of fantasy that really is impossible to come true on any level. More likely that kind of lifestyle is going to make you struggle with your health and lead to health problems unfortunately later down the road.

So if you want to be better than mediocre, you had better start recording your progress! We talk about it all the time, if you can do 5 press ups in week one, and 30 press ups in week 6, then that is substantial progress and you are doing at least most things very well indeed!!

This focus that most people give for the first month to six weeks should be carried on throughout your journey in health and fitness, it really make all the difference and stop you from slipping back too much. Keeping a workouts journal will also give you the road map that you have undertaken from being perhaps overweight and out of shape, to becoming much leaner and well toned. Your workout history will show you this and all you have to do is keep following it and you will get to the same impressive destination!!!

Making a statement that you are doing your best with your training, you are doing your best with your food is a lot harder than what usually what happens in practice.

The hardest thing i have to achieve with individuals is getting them to believe in themselves, and to develop confidence in themselves, if i can do this, then i know i have won the hardest battle and things should move along very quickly after this.

All the great coaches in sport and in  business pursue this quest all the time, and use different ways to do it.

Some people need a good shouting at, in fact they thrive on it.

Some people would crumble if you shouted at them, and their confidence would be lost forever, this is why every individual is different and needs to be handled with different degrees of care!

Telling someone that they will soon be capable of climbing any hill, any mountain and by climbing i mean running or walking hard! I am no expert in mountaineering and im not pretending to be, but i do know how to get up vicious hills and how to get others up the same challenging hills!!

It is all small steps, and you have to demonstrate to the individual that there is progress each and every week. If you focus on progress then you will already be in the fast lane of development. If you simply show up and go through the motions, your workouts will not only be very boring but unproductive too, and thats exactly the situation you don’t want to be in!!!

The positive nature of hill training can never be underestimated! Everyone who i have ever taken up hills always conquers their insecurities about their true ability and sometimes, a new and much more confident person is born from being able to conquer any hill in the area. You may also find that the same person will never run flat again, the prospect of hill running or walking can be addictive not only in the challenge factor, but the results in terms of fitness are always tremendous!!!

Get up there and give it a go as long as you have developed your fitness to a good standard! There must be a hill which you currently think is impossible, its to to crush your fears and surprise yourself so give yourself 6 weeks to conquer it, edging up further each workout, a little progress every week will lead to massive progress over 6 weeks so plan it and see how well you can do!!

Great things happen in your body when you first start exercising. You body responds well to moving around more, and your body likes the feeling of doing things again, and you develop your confidence as you go.

Your body responds very well in particular when you adjust your food intake. Most people who go from eating processed food to more natural, fresh foods will experience increased energy levels, and an inner confidence that they are going to get healthier if you keep your habits up.

Most of the measurements i take on individuals who start an exercise programme look a lot better at the end of their first month. Progress is relatively quick and 4-6 weeks can make a good difference to anyone as long as they show commitment. Two inches off your waist will always look and feel great, and your clothes will feel a lot looser too. I always tell people if they are carrying a lot more weight than they should, that the biggest worry they will have is changing their wardrobe!!!

The trick is to keep these exciting feelings going well into the times when the novelty factor of keeping fit and healthy has gone, and make it part of your daily life and make it become routine.

This is why routines are important so you end up doing healthy things without even thinking about it, which is exactly where you want to be.

Your workout becomes “your” time when you relax, get rid of stress and you find yourself again after a long day, or even before you embark on your challenging day. If you can keep your workouts going in times of stress in your life, you know that you have fully integrated a healthy lifestyle into your life and you should already be relatively fit and healthy, and have some good ability in terms of exercise of all kinds.

A true athlete and i mean that in a broad term, should be able to do outside exercise such as running, cycling, hill walking as well as work inside with resistance workouts, and you should be able to combine them too. You should be versatile and open to new ideas, no need to spend all your time in the gym, there are endless and exciting ways to keep fit and the gym is just one angle you can use. You will learn more about your body in different environments so lets keep it varied and keep doing your best!!!

11th April 2011

April 11th is another turning point for us in this country.

The weather has been absolutely fantastic over the last week, signifying summer is just around the corner, and all the positive benefits it brings.

We have talked about all winter, that then was the time to put all the work in because summer would be here before you knew it? Well spring is here and summer nearly here, and the time when you all will be wearing less and less clothes, so you will feel like being in better and better shape. If you have been working hard all winter, then you should be looking heck of a lot better by now and feeling on top of the world.

If your winter has  been all about lazing on the settee instead of training, and wearing big baggy jumpers to hide all the weight gain, then you may be dreading summer coming in terms of choice of clothes.

So April 11Th could well be the turning point for you whatever shape you are in, and this moment right now can literally change your life.

Do you decide that the bloated and sickly feelings of fast and processed food is no longer for  you OR do you accept the fact that you are always going to be overweight and never in shape?

OF COURSE YOU SHOULD NEVER ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YOU WILL BE OVERWEIGHT AND OUT OF SHAPE!!!

April 11th could easily be the day when you DECIDE to do something about from this Monday, to get back into shape, or to get into really great shape for the FIRST TIME!!! If that sounds far more exciting than settling for a mediocre existence, then continue reading every day, and keep discovering the endless possibilities and benefits that come from living a very healthy lifestyle!!! There truly is another way to live your life in terms of health and its time to leave the faddy diets behind for good this time, THEY DO NOT WORK LONG TERM as 97% of scientific studies show!!!!!

8th April

Definitely the warmest day of the year and definitely a day to get out there and do something constructive with your health and fitness. The term health and fitness doesnt mean just appear to be doing something, it means adopting a whole lifestyle and living it for the rest of your life. This is where its at!!!

It doesnt mean going to extremes, or it doesnt mean playing at it either, you dont have to be 100% perfect as nobody ever is, all it means is giving things a good go and doing your best 80% of the time.

The weekend is here now and you have two choices. Either you have worked extremely hard on your fitness  this week, eaten very well and you deserve a day off tomorrow, or you have been working hard in an office for example, havent been able to train like you know you should have all week, missed workouts and the weekend now actually offers you a wonderful opportunity to make up for all of that.

The weekend offers you a great opportunity to get up early tomorrow and train early before anyone else is around. The shopping can wait until later!!! There is no excuse to stay in bed on a scorching morning particularly after the winter we have just had. If you do, then you’re prone to making excuses all the time, which means you’re going to be prone to having mediocre results!!!!

I remember someone told me once that they had GIVEN UP their training because their training partner had temporarily stopped training!!!! This was as pathetic an excuse as i have ever heard and i knew right there that this person would never achieve anything worthwhile with that kind of weak attitude!! For the record we have all had weak attitudes, but its always a question if you can recover from a weak attitude or not?

This is why individuals with the weakest genetics can get into great shape quicker than those with great genetics, its all about attitude and desire, and whether you’re willing to do the things you need to do to get into shape for life!!!!!

Saturday morning is a great chance to show your character, i will be up at 6am walking the dogs, this is no time to laying in bed feeling sorry for yourself, lets do it!!!!
